My first post. Hi from New Zealand Aotearoa.
I’ve just bought a vintage Starfire IV. I think it is 1979. Someone found it in their great aunts closet. It hasn’t been played much.
Crazy big flat frets. I presume it has the HB1s?
but anyway it sounds awesome.
Slightly harder to play than my Epi Sheraton but wow it sounds so much more alive

Welcome to LTG and a great first post! Congrats on the cool closet SF-IV! Those are, indeed, HB-1 pickups. Enjoy!

Welcome to LTG! Yes, she is from 1979. Walnut color finished. You find details on page 3 of the 1978 catalog which our forum owner GAD uploaded here: (different pickguard is normal)

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on the lucky score. I love that era of Starfires, especially the block inlays and HB-1s. Yours looks beautiful.

very nice, drilled bridge, HB-1's, neck mounted at 18th fret, master volume, block inlays, bound fret board, deluxe case, and best of all it is walnut! welcome and enjoy that bird!

Welcome!

What makes it harder to play?
I’ve been wondering that myself! It feels shorter and stockier than my epi. But I’ve measured them and they are almost exactly the same apart from the Guild having a deeper and wider body. So, it must be the setup. I’m sure I’ll get used to it very quickly.

Thanks everyone for the welcome. I’ll take the guitar in for a clean and a setup. Can’t wait to get it back with new strings!

Possibly a silly question but I'd love to hear your string recommendations.
I'll be playing a mix of styles. Bit of indie-rock mainly but also country and all sorts.

With HB-1 pickups I like to use strings with a pure nickel wrap. Many brands to choose from.

I like DR strings. I find they are close to the old stock Guild strings.
