Yup - many pc-boards had to have jumpers - especially the one-sided - because either the designers were lazy or no-good or otherwise it would have created other problems - like huge size or capacitance issues @ high fq. Then bare wire was substituted with resistor look-a-likes - maybe they were easier to mount with automatic component inserting robots . . .

Just guessing 🤩

Exactly right. They come on tape rolls just like other resistors so the same automated machines can install them. I just love the single black band.
