Dear LTG Brothers,
My father-in-law, Shamsur Rahman Faruqi, passed away this Christmas day in India at his home in Allahabad. He had been battling COVID-19, then a severe fungus infection of the left eye and left sinus. He was 85. My spouse Mehr, fortunately was with him, taking care of him for the past five weeks, along with her sister who lives in Delhi. He wished to breathe his last in his own bed, and was given that chance this morning when he was flown by medical evacuation flight from Delhi to Allahabad. He expired just one hour after reaching home.
He was the most important Urdu language literary critic and creative writer of his generation. He didn't suffer fools lightly. While working in a career in the Indian Administrative Service, he managed to publish a monthly literary journal for 40 years, and published well over 60 scholarly books. In addition he published novels, short stories and poetry. Though he was a religious sceptic, he nevertheless was a cultural Muslim, enjoyed and observed the main celebrations. He was a family man -- the central focus of scores of family members and thousands of admiring fans. I don't know what we will do without him. All of the main Indian newspapers are carrying his obituary.
May God grant him everlasting peace.
