My DV52 …

Hi everyone out there!
Some months ago I got great advice from you guys which led to buying myfirstguild . (http://www.letstalkguild.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8114)

Now this is the report:
I LOVE IT! :D

First of all I tried Elixir strings and didn't like them very much; what a significant improvement those Jon Pearse strings made! Phosphor Bronze lights were fine but the b-string seemed a little bit "noisy" strumming hard. Changing to 80/20 Bronze lights made the guitar sound even better to me. Wow!!!

Concerning uneven top my luthier said it's fine and helps stabilizing the top (as with a violin). He did a neck setup, reglued a lose brace and the enpin-block (you had to look very carefully eve to find this crack), and did some polish on the spot where the arm-elbow lies on the top: the finish was kind of rough there (from sweat I think).

I think about letting him change the bridge to a new bone bridge because there's a little bit of buzz on E/A strings (with loud playing only). On the other hand as far as I understand I'd get a higher action and lower playability. :? But there's no hurry.

I'm afraid the pickup is neither a fishman nor L.R. Baggs but some kind of cheaper design - it works well and sound is ok.

Here you can find some pics of myfirstguild  :

I also have one of Don's gorgeous leather straps. Simply beautiful!

Reporting more details ain't easy because I don't have much experience with instruments of this class.

Finally there are four things contributing to better sound for me:
- it's so beautiful
- it plays fine
- it sounds superb (espacially with JP 80/20 - thanks Grammy!)
- it's fun to play, so I play more often …

Re: My DV52 …

Congratulations, Markus! A gorgeous set of photos of an amazing guitar.

When I first joined LTG, there was lots of talk about D25's and DV52's. Both were hyped for very good reason. I've personally had better luck with my DV52... the tones just blow me away every time I pick it up... so much so that I got a Westerly era DV6 (a lesser frills mahogany back/sides version of the 52). Now I'm convinced the DV6 is among the most underrated guitars Guild has ever made, but the DV52 is a cannon. Play it beside a Martin D28 sometime and compare prices... mindblowing stuff!

Again, congrats, and enjoy!!!

Re: My DV52 …

Congrats Markus.

I just brought my DV52 home yesterday from LuthierBabe. I had a new bone nut and saddle made for it. I put a set of JP 80/20s in the case and when I picked it up she said, "Those strings really work on those guitars, don't they?" I had my JF30 done last month as well. She doesn't get too many Guilds around here, but the ones she does get she says that she remembers their sound.

Re: My DV52 …

Congrats!

I just took my DV52 (original owner!) from 1995? in to Gryphon Strings today. Guitar had belly bulge - wasn't sure if it was a problem or not. Guy there stuck a mirror in and looked at it and declared it all fine.

When I got the guitar, I had a pickup put in (I *think* it was an L.R. Baggs LB6, I had no clue back then). The luthier adjusted everything for me as part of the installation, I assume. In the 13 years since, I've NEVER adjusted the guitar, and it's been playing just fine. I did switch from 13-gauge to 12-gauge, which is easier on my left hand, but the guitar still plays well as when I first got it.

I marvel at how well this thing's held up, and look forward to many more years with it. Hope you get much mileage out of yours, too!

Hey Markus, if you ever get tired of that beauty, call me first!!! I've been lusting for a DV-52 since Graham first introduced his here on LTG. They were reasonably priced on eBay a year ago, but I think the word is out now... I've waited too long... I'm a GAS'n again for sure...

Wish I could deal with my own belly bulge that easily. Maybe a brace needs to be reglued?

Ok, OT and then some, but it seemed too obvious...

Re: My DV52 …

Markus,

I had a DV52, but sold it....the only guitar I ever really regretted selling, it was the second best sounding and playing guitar I've ever played and that includes a bunch of nice Guild guitars. They're all nice, but the DV52 is a special guitar. Hindsight is 20/20. Keep and enjoy yours.....congratulations to you, I hope she brings you decades of enjoyment.

Thank you for your positive comments!
