Hi
This is my first post. Just wanted to say hi to everyone and post a few pics of my '79 S300 after undergoing some maintenance. Feels almost as brand new. I bought the guitar second hand end of the 80's. It already came with original HB-1 pickups in spite of being manufactured as S300D as displayed on the truss rod plate and the label under the black electronic plate that indicates S300D-CH.

Nice, and welcome. Dog approved and the way the color varies with the light is intriguing.

Did the "maintenance" include a refinish? That guitar looks brand new! Very nice - and welcome!

That's a mighty fine looking guitar! IMO the coolest looking of the "weird" Guild solidbodies. I have yet to get my hands on one, but it'll happen. :)

Yeah, I have the same question. It looks more reddish than most examples I have seen & I really like it. She'a beauty!

Welcome to LTG. I noticed your location - are you a Barca fan? One more win for the treble.

Dang, that looks new. Nice. I'm usually not a fan of oddball shaped guitars, but something about that just works for me.

We made those guitars in cherry red, for sure, but not that many. Most of them were natural, black, or white. I tried in vain to get Lilien and Tell to make them in custom colors, to no avail. They just couldn't think that far ahead, and were so out of touch with reality at that point. Vintage Fender custom colors were starting to become popular at that point, but they had their heads buried in the sand. It wasn't until the X-79 that they finally started doing colors other than the usual boring ones from day one.

Holy moly what a way to make an entrance!

I love S300s, and that is one seriously fine example! Welcome!

Yes. It included a nitro refinish. The cherry red is a bit lighter than the original so you can better appreciate the wood grain. I really like it.

Hi DrumBob. I find it a bit intriguing that being a S300D it came with original Guild HB-1 pickups instead of DiMarzios. I always assumed that the first owner just changed them. Is there any chance they were already mounted in Westerly?

Does it say 300D in the control cavity? Because they might have just swapped the truss-rod cover (which is on upside-down).

Whoops - re-read the OP. Never mind.

Didn't notice it's upside down. I'll fix it right away. Regarding the control cavity, yes S-300D CH is written on the label.

Nice entrance indeed! Welcome and congrats for the Champions League win, too! Guild is known for their consistency of inconsistency so it might well be that those HB-1's were mounted at the factory.

We made them standard with the HB-1 pickups, but if you wanted DiMarzio's, the guitar contained the suffix D at the end.

Yours looks like factory installed HB-1's with an incorrect label and truss rod cover. That was known to happen from time to time. Then again, maybe the original owner didn't like the DiMarzio's and reverted back to the HB-1's. You never know.
