Over in the Digital photography thread we were discussing monitor colors and the such. So I started a new thread here to get maximum exposure! (Pun intended!)

Below are five photos of the same guitar at five different exposures ranging from darkest to lightest. Which photo looks the best on your monitor? Please vote on the poll.

Should I use my at-work or at-home monitor to vote? :mrgreen:

(Not that I would ever look at LTG while at work. :shock: )

O.K. so I used my at-work monitor to vote for A.
Everything else looks overexposed. Image B just ever so slightly.

B looks best to me on my work flat-panel... I should note that I view LTG over a VNC connection, Kurt, but I don't think that affects the color interpretation on the monitor. Not sure.

B looks best to me as far as contrast/brightness go but they all seem to have a slightly blue cast.

Well, I looked again, and it's between A and B. The headstock detail is better in B but the inlays are a bit washed out in that version. There is still a bit of a color cast - bluish or magenta-ish. It's not real pronounced but it's there. Of course, that might have occurred when the image was taken. Lots of digital cameras put a magenta cast on highlights, which wouldn't be the monitor's fault.

Yes, it does have a little too much blue in it. I gave up trying to adjust the "hue" in digital photos as I couldn't get it to work with any consistency.

Also, the photos were taken with an old cheap Kodak DX4530 camera like this;

Not exactly state of the art! :oops:

Overall, A looks best. I think the exposure is better for the body and background in B, but the fretbard markers are gettng a bit washed out. They look better in A. If I was going to fiddle, I'd start with A and play with the gamma to bring the brightness of the body and background up a bit. In the old days of printing, I'd start with A and "dodge" the body to lighten it, or start with B and "burn-in" the fretboard to darken it.

I can't vote again, but on my home PC monitor, I still like A best. Although it is just a tad dark.

On B the fretboard and headstock are slightly washed out, but the body looks better.
