"And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" is an Eric Bogle song. Heard him sing it live. "No Mans Land" is another great one of his. Also Memorial Day appropriate.

Friend of mine (Phil Deverill) plays 'Band played Waltzing Matilda' - and in Brit Land we don't have Memorial Day as such - though he plays it in May - but our equivalent is in November (we have two, Poppy Day - with a minute's silence on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month and Remberance Sunday on the Sunday nearest when the Queen and other dignitaries put poppy wreaths on the Cenotaph memorial in London. Mainly arose because the 1914-18 (1916-18 for USA) battlefields were covered in poppies. It is held in remembranc of all killed and wounded in action, whatever war.

So in November, I usually play 'The Green Fields of France' in the folk clubs - anyone heard that one?

First heard The Green Fields of France on a Makem and Clancy LP. When I met her, my wife had an Eric Bogle LP with both GFoF and the Band Played Waltzing Matilda... and many years ago (pre-internet days) I worked out about half the chords for both, but didn't commit them to paper or memory. Both are on my list of songs to learn... probably can find the chords/tab on-line nowadays.

"No Mans Land" is the actual title of the song you're referring to as "The Green Fields of France", according to Mr. Bogle.

You'll have better luck finding it online that way.

By the way, Eric has posted the lyrics to all his songs on his website:

http://ericbogle.net

Enjoy :D

Oh, and by the way, despite having written some of the most devastatingly sad lyrics/songs, Eric is also hysterically amusing seen live

You'll get a taste of that if you visit his website.

"....And the band played Waltzing Mathilda..." For those of you who might not know, this is what the the men did when they got off the boat:

Gallipoli was a disaster....for both sides. The 1st President of Turkey, who'd been there during the battle, wept openly when touring the area three years later.

"When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn..." Where have all the Flowers Gone
