Maybe the Guild humbucker wasn't so bad after all...

Glenn Cornick - Jethro Tull et. al. playing a Gibson non-reverse Thunderbird with an added Guild humbucker.

From Flyguitars which is edited by an LTGer.

See this for discussion of Glenn's Starfire bass.

I'm personally a fan of the Gibson mudbucker as well, it's a nice vintagey sound that fits well with some styles of music

Lots of folks don't have anything nice to say about the Guild humbucker which is why I was amused by adding it to a Gibson. But they do have their fans.

Tone is a matter of personal preference but I much prefer the Hagstrom in the Starfire to the JS with humbuckers.

JMO of course but I've never liked humbuckers on basses. Every Gibson EB0 or EB3 I've played never did a thing for me, and always sounded terribly boomy next to my old P-Bass. I'd like to play one now to see if I feel the same way, but like Frono, make mine a Hagstrom. 8)

From Glen:

"With a genuine Gibson Vibrola (which worked perfectly as it has no moving parts) Yes it was a nasty beast! I used to love those Guild humbuckers. I still have a bunch of them! I recently put one on a P Bass and hid it under the pickup cover so it looks like a stock P Bass. It doesn't sound like one!! They are great pickups for ugly raw power. Not for the faint hearted!!"

That was "spray coffee on the keyboard" funny.

Thank you.

I'd love to hear how they play with bisonics.... my mellostang bass has a dimarzio model one humbucker (neck position) which, when combined with the bisonic (middle position), sounds fantastic and creates a sond all its own.

Glen just referred to the pickup as the Guild Thunderfart!
