Check out the inlay work of Larry Robinson, too.
There are many talented inlay artists these days. And, with print technology being what it is, there are also many decals available. I happen to prefer inlays over decals, but I do understand the appeal (contrast the older Guild logo(s) with the Martin logo). I also prefer shell over plastic, but that is another rabbit hole for another hunt.
On a recent guitar build, a customer actually needed reassurance that I was inlaying real shell, not applying stickers. I would have never thought to glue on decals, but then I crawled out from under my rock and realized how prevalent decals are. (I am safely back under my rock, in case anyone was concerned)
