Glad our Kiwis are okay. Crying shame about Christchurch, by all reports a jewel of a city that I've always wanted to visit. Gulf Coast mojo on the way to New Zealand.

Ian we have a really good Canadian product that could come in handy, Stanfield underwear...very well built and would stand up to an earthquake, although some maintenance might be required after the fact...seriously glad that you and your mom are ok....Steffan

My heart breaks for you Gary...I know you love the area, and have enjoyed the photos you posted to the point of wanting to be your neighbor...me and my Guilds..and to see any part of your desired life in ruins is just too sad....Steffan

Once again, I thank you wonderful people for your kind thoughts.

Death toll is currently at 147, and will rise. Approximately 200 people are missing. There is virtually no hope of finding any more alive.
The building where the greatest toll occurred housed a language school for foreign students and reportedly, citizens of eight countries are among the dead.

An ex-Prime Minister, now at the UN, has visited and reported that the damage is on a scale to equal that which occurred in Haiti.

An eminent expert has declared that, that quake, in most cities, would have flattened everything. As it is, it's currently estimated that at least 40% of the CBD will have to be demolished. Evidently, the ground "accelerated" at a rate of 2.2 times the force of gravity. I'm not entirely sure what that actually means. Thank goodness for NZ's very strict building codes !

... and requiring reinforcing steel ... it's what they didn't have in Haiti ... besides all the money, the Duvaliers took that with them too.

The whole scene looks terrible. I am so happy our members from that part of the world are safe. As the owner of a motorcycle forum many of our members have become very close friends; just like here at LTG. I'm like a mother hen. When I don't see a post from them over an extended period of time my heart sinks and I worry something has happened. The forum experience has lifted me in knowing that there truly are some wonderful folks in this world and everyone of 'em fills my spirit. Again, so very happy you all are safe.

Peace

Just a terrible event in every meaningful way. We have the same concerns where I live (San Francisco Peninsula) and when it comes, it won't be pretty here either.

One thing I know for sure is that Christchurch will rise again and it will be better than ever. I've spent many a wonderful day in Christchurch and it will always be a very special place on this planet.
