Just saw an eBay auction for a Corona F-412. The neck is 3-piece mahogany-maple-mahogany sandwich. I find this surprising. Aren't most F-412s (and F-50s, I assume) maple necks?

That's a new one to me, Chaz. My JF-65 12 neck looks a lot like the one on your JF-30 12, gorgeous flamey maple with a thin slice of rosewood, I think. You can also see some considerable flame on my F-512 neck, but with the dark stain it only shows a little, if the light is just right. This looks like a mid-line neck on an otherwise top of the line guitar. Three (oops, only two, the F-112 is one piece mahogany) of my Guilds have necks like this one, nothing wrong with them, but still...

Steffan,

I can't remember, is your F-50 a maple-bodied version or a rosewood F-50R?

So, guys, what I was trying to say was that I was surprised to see this darker mahogany/maple/mahogany neck on a maple-bodied F-412. I guess I was intimating that, yes, I *would* expect to see this on the darker-bodied F-512/F-50R models, but that on the lighter bodied (maple) I'd expect a maple neck or maple/mahogany/maple (i.e., predominantly light wood).

'Strang, you said you can see flames on your F-512 neck ... Do you have a picture of that neck somewhere? Is that a case of a light neck on a dark-bodied guitar? That would surprise me.

As for the Westerly JF-30-12s.. oh yeah! That flamey maple neck is one of the main reasons I got one! :) That said, I have two maple guitars with one-piece mahogany necks. I just wish they had maple. :)

Hey Chaz, I'll have to get back to you on that, I'm at Mama ' Strang's in GA until the middle of the month. She kayaks, swims, golfs, plays serious classical literature on piano, plays bridge, does crosswords (in ink) and in general refuses to act her age (93). Mme ' Strang and I always come for the 4th, and with Mama ' Strang's neighbors we put on a three-house block party at her lakefront home on Lake Peachtree SW of Atlanta. Fireworks over the water, man. Anyway, veering back, it may be hard to capture the flame in a photo because the neck is stained very dark to match the rosewood. It's there, but it's very hard to see. My G-312 is the same way. I don't know if I can show you flame, but there is blonde wood on either side of the dark center strip. I had a little delamination problem years ago, and never bothered to retouch the color once my luthier and I were sure it was stabilized. I'll try to put up some pix when I get back to CA.

Enjoy your 4th celebration with your mom, 'Strang. She sounds like a terrific woman. Best wishes. We were at Old Orchard Beach in Maine this evening enjoying the festivities there! I've turned my Ibanez M310 into a "beach" guitar, which is now a permanent fixture at our place there. I will note... it has a flamed maple body with a mahogany neck. :)

Steffan, great shots of the F-50R. Beauty!

Hmmm, Chazzer, I'm not sure we're quite on the same wavelength, here. My maple Guild has a natural finish maple neck, my rosewood Guilds have stained maple necks. I was quite taken by surprise by the guitar in your original post.

Thank you and Taabru45 for the nice comments about my mother. "Miss Dolly", as she is known around here, is a former First Lady of Peachtree City, and is treated like royalty around here. And with good reason, even if it's me sayin' it!

OK, 'Strang. It's all good. :) I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of your dark-stained maple necks on rosewood bodies.

All of my rosewood Guilds have a mahogany/maple(center-strip)/mahogany 3-piece configuration. My rosewood G-312 on the left side of the picture doesn't show well, but is that configuration. My rosewood Tacoma F-512 and '71 F-50R (center and right) are the same. The '71 F-50R on the right here is just a lighter stain/finish. My '67 F-50R is in the second picture (that one wasn't part of the family until recently ;)) and has the same center maple strip but predominantly mahogany neck, but the stain is a really nice match to the rosewood.:

Here's another shot of the G-312, just to show the center maple strip:

Hey, here's a picture of my "beach" Ibanez which is a configuration like the original post that I think looks a little off when you compare it to a natural maple neck on this type of guitar:

My JF65-12 has a mahogany neck like yours. I think it looks awesome, and probably warms the sound a bit. No worries ...
