There has been a new Bluegrass Special hanging around Richards Music in Lawrence KS for the past few months. I'm pretty sure it is a Tacoma because of the age. It is the only non-GAD Guild in the place. Since I have little interest in dreads I have not investigated further. If I remember correctly it is a little less than 2K. The URL is below:

Hey, you guys are great! I am reading these posts and checking these leads out, looking for the right guitar. I almost said "axe"....but I have no idea how that term originated. I have axes, but they don't look like guitars....did this come out of the heavy metal scene?? I have some possibilities, but nothing firm yet.

Well you know if'n your gonna axe a question - some fool is going to go look this up ...

The use of "axe" as slang for a musical instrument dates back to 1955, i.e., in the edenic pre-Kiss days. The instrument to which "axe" was first applied, however, was not the guitar, but the saxophone. The logic may have been simply the "sax/axe" rhyme, but another theory ties "axe" to the "swing" of a jazz sax player in full stride. "Axe" was also later applied to the trumpet before becoming accepted as slang for the guitar, a use which has probably persisted in part because of the instrument's resemblance to an actual axe.

Ha! Yes I am still around. I almost had a deal lined up on a Bluegrass special...but quite understandably the owner decided to keep it. I do appreciate you looking out for me....really looking for a Tacoma built d50. I might break down and bid on the one from rocky streets.

Moose,

There's 2 more D50's on ebay - however both are Westerly made. IMHO the West's are the best, but I understsand your preference is Tacoma.

Actually I don't know if every D50 is a "Bluegrass Special", or if only certain D50's had the designation. Even after nearly a year at this my Guild knowledge if far from complete.

Howdy...I guess the title about says it. I'm in the market for a nice used Tacoma-built D50. Any leads would be appreciated. I might even consider a trade for my D55...which is a super guitar...but I'd like a slight shift in sound. I have tried contacting Larry (below), but he seems to be out.

Thanks, Mike

I may be interested in your D55. I recently acquired a near mint Westerly D50. Has original case and the only thing making it less than mint is the pickguard. It started to peel up and I had my guitar guru/luthier make a new pickguard to exactly match the original just a 16th inch larger to cover the area which was left from the old pickguard peeling up. Other than that its 100% original. If I didn't tell you, you couldn't tell that its been changed.

Let me know. The guitar is at a trusted friends house right now as he's interested in buying it. I let him use it for awhile.

c70man, I think I am looking more to buy a D50 first and then compare the sound and see if I want to part with the D55. There is a good bit of sentimental value involved with that guitar...something I realized after making the original post. The reason I have been holding out for a Tacoma built is that I know they have very nice note definition and an open airy sound. My D55 is wonderful too, just much softer, rounder and complex. I don't have any experience with the Westerlys and the quality of their sound. I'm sure it must be good to have so many aficionados. I will definitely keep yours in mind.

Vusterle...replied to your pm.

Thanks guys,

Mike

See my earlier post on Aug. 29. As of yesterday the BG Special is still there, the price is now $1795, surprised they didn't take it to Winfield this weekend to try and peddle it there. Mass Street Music had about a third of their acoustics off the wall and in a van down at Winfield. Fortunately they left the McPhersons behind so I could goof with them a little!

Thanks spiderman!
I just had my second private deal vaporize as we came down to making the transaction. These have to be great guitars! People just seem to love them. Next time I may need to immediately hop on an airplane before the seller has a chance to come to their senses. It seems that on rare occasion a Guild owner will inadvertently consume a mushroom or puff too long on a peace pipe, rise , and begin mumbling..."I think I will sell my guild....I think I will sell my guild" ...then they wake up on some forum or in the middle of an email and say "What the heck??!!???....." Perhaps I can work on hypnotic suggestion or start growing more of the mushrooms in my basement. I will win at this game.
