Is this akin to the Baby Taylor?

Yes. It's a direct competitor. I prefer these, though. I think they sound better, and I can't get past the exposed screw heads on the Taylor's 16th fret.
The Martin neck is made of a material called Stratabond - a very strong and stable laminate.

I have one of these, too--bought it in anticipation of the day that my then six-year-old daughter was ready to move on from the ukulele (which, sadly, she never was). I compared it to the Baby Taylor and much preferred the Martin.
