Should Kolb deluxe tuners on a 1964 F50 be gold or nickel? Or did they use both?

Hey Darryl,

Should be gold! Unless the model was ordered with nickel tuners and in that case it would have the 'Special' designation on the label.

Sincerely,

Thanks Hans. It has nickels on it, but maybe they originally were gold but it all wore off, or maybe somebody took the goldies off and put nickels on. Either way, I have some goldies I'll put on it.

Hello Darryl,

Here's one a couple of numbers away from your F-50:

Darryl, it's funny that you mention that as I recall that when I got my '71 F-50R I couldn't tell if the buttons were gold-plated or not. I guess gold-plate is just not that durable over time. Your Kolbs and my Grovers really were indistinguishable as ever having been gold. Actually, in my case, it was the buttons that you couldn't tell. The bodies of the tuners still had some plate on them.

Oh, and yeah... what Walter said... I'd like to see any pictures if you have 'em, Darryl!

Hans, how long did Guild use these? Pretty cool looking with those pearl buttons!!

What's an ebony backstrap?
Sorry, Darryl, I was referring to the black back of your headstock, like the old Gibson Hummingbirds. Is that painted wood, or is it an ebony overlay? E.g., this Taylor that I used to own had an ebony covering (see below) on its satin mahogany -- really lovely. I'm not used to seeing F-50s with a backstrap:

chazmore,

It's a dumb-Rosie piece of plastic. Apparently Guild used those sometimes, and other times they decided just to just paint it, paint it, paint it black as night. I don't know why. I also think Guild's plastic peghead overlays look like poop.

Ah, of course. Yeah, I have to admit I agree with you, Darryl... Not a big fan of the shiny plastic overlays. I know they're a Guild trademark, but I guess I'm just a sucker for the "wood" aesthetic.

Me too. Why spend extra for plastic when wood looks better? Like the Martin pegheads.

I also like wood pickguards with a tough clear coat on the front.
