This young family has chosen a dangerous place to call home.

Is there a good way to make them move a few hundred yards :?:

Great shot showing perfect (?) Killdeer nesting habitat! They do it all the time!!

A good plan is to get a half-dozen or so (more?) folks to stand side-by-side with arms outstretched, and slowly aprroach the birds (especially the chicks), and basically herd them away from the dangerous area, maybe toward a grassy area away from the runway. The adults might try to distract you but focus on the chicks.

Crazy birds, those Killdeer!! 8)

Yeah, when I get too close the adults put on a big show..."I'm injured and helpless, eat me!" Meanwhile there's some perfect rocky, tall grassy areas really close by. I'll try what you suggested to move them, thanks!

The nesting places common in Ohio were on the tops of what the roofing industry calls a felt and gravel 'built-up roof' (BUR) predominately for commercial buildings. The birds would lay their eggs out in the open on the pea-size gravel. They would raise such a stink when roofers showed up.

Modern technology lent itself to new roofing applications that included such things rubber elastomers, PVC, CSPE, and other plastic polymers. These roofs were simply too hot for nesting. I was always amazed the eggs were out in the open but of course that made them safe(r) from predators.

Peace
