Songwriter, musician & singer Kate McGarrigle died on Jan 18, age 63. With her older sister Anna, Kate produced numerous albums and wrote many great songs. The McGarrigle sisters put their families first, limiting their touring and performing and concentrating on writing.

Kate is survived by her children Rufus and Martha Wainwright.

Kate McGarrigle was one of the few Canadian singers/writers who worked equally well in French and in English. She will be sorely missed.

I frequently sing her "Heart Like A Wheel", and it breaks my heart every time.

Actually, Anna wrote that beautiful song, but the sisters were so inseparable it's easy to think it was hers. :(

Thanks Sandy. Those two voices were so completely intertwingled that everything they did sounded like one very complicated person.

True that. If you've ever hear them being interviewed, they finish each others sentences frequently!

Thanks Ross, very sad. Like many I was first introduced to the McGarrigles through Heart Like a Wheel. There are some really nice YouTubes around with them.
My favorite is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vK7jitvJXI from the TransAtlantic Sessions, although the song was written by Anna, I believe, and the sound quality could be better.
:(

KM's passing came only a week after the death of Lhasa de Sela, another Montreal songwriter & performer. The Canadian music scene is much poorer.

At my weekly Open Stage last night, many of the participants sang McGarrigle songs.
