Does anyone know what an original S-90 case from the early '70's looks like? I see a lot of Guilds from that time had the straight rectangular-shaped ones with the pads attached to the inside of the cover, but the S-90 was a lower line model, so maybe they had a different type of case?

I did a little research and came up empty-handed.

BTW: I'm new here so "hey y'all."

I'll post pics sometime when I can borrow a decent camera.

LTG-er Danerectal could probably tell you for certain.

He could sure tell you what he's seen. There was no real designation (to my knowledge) of a specific S-90 case. There was a deluxe and and economy case, both of which were available with either guitar or separately. There is a shaped crap-board case that was sold cheaply (kind of like a gig bag with latches). I have one of each, and I wouldn't wasted my time trying to get one of the economy cases, especially if your only motive is to match the economy of the S-90.

...and welcome, welcome!!!

Thanks!

Yep, that looks like it, although mine doesn't say Guild on the side. And the case in that listing is in better shape.

Guess I don't shop for guitars in Australia enough!

One more thing: Mine doesn't have the Guild "G" knobs. I wonder if those were used on all the S-90's and maybe mine were changed at some point in the past.

I do have the original Guild strap (which is kinda pathetic!), cleaning cloth, and how to care for a guitar pamphlet. The guitar itself is in pretty good shape and all original from what I can tell, with the angled brass tailpiece instead of the square bridge on that '71 listed in Australia. Mine's a '72 so they must have changed to the bridge/tailpiece setup that year.

When I got mine it had "witch hat" knobs. I'm pretty sure that was standard for a while at least.

Yeah, I had a feeling it was an economy case, which I guessed just because it was marketed as a more intermediate level guitar than the S-100:

"An electric that tells your friends you're moving up--because it's a Guild." (1975 Guild catalog)

http://www.vintageguitars.org.uk/guild75p8.php

(I looked at this site a lot for info because of the nice reproduction of the catalog pages. I'm sure all you Guild-o-philes have already found it).

I'm not looking for any specific case for this guitar. Just wanted to find out about the one that came with it.

My '96 S-100 has the original case and is much better (obviously!).

I don't have good pics at the moment, just crappy cell phone ones. If you want to know what it looks like go back to a thread in October '08 (I think) where the poster said he added another tone and volume knob and at first thought he had an S-100. That's what my S-90 looks like.

Note: If I post the same thing more than once or in the wrong place, bear with me. I'm getting the hang of the controls on this site.

Thanks for the welcomes! Glad to be here!

Welcome.

The economy case at eBay has to be cheapest piece of junk I have ever seen the Guild name on.

Yep! When I first saw it I thought "What the hell? Is this guitar a miniature?" It's such a small, chintzy case.

Yup, that's just like mine. Garbage. It's half a step above a gig bag, though.

I have a nice Fender case I'll probably keep it in instead.

Those knobs look like yours?

No. Mine are black with a sharper taper and labeled volume and tone on the tops. That's not the first time I've seen some like that. Pretty nice. Be careful with the Fender Guild cases. I have one and it's not a very comfortable (for the neck joint) fit with my older ones. After the transitional era (1974-76?), it's a little better.

edit: On second thought, those are exactly like mine, except clear.

Ah, so they probably are the original knobs. I'd imagine so. Whoever had it kept everything original as far as I can tell.

I have a strat/tele case that's maybe three years old or so. The S-90 neck sits in it pretty well, maybe better than that piece of junk it's in now!

I only have it because it came with the MIM Strat I bought. I'm going to resell the guitar so I tracked down the 60th Anniversary gig bag it originally came with. The case is very nice so it's staying here. After getting rid of my Ibanez I don't have any use for it so the S-90 gets a better bed to sleep in.

That's about as close a hit on a site as I can find. The case I have isn't cut to form-fit a Strat so it's more versatile.

Everyone--thanks for all the responses! I'm gonna learn a lot here I think!
