This is a good, 3-LP sampler that was released during the "blues revival" that started during the mid-1960s. There are four sides by Johnny Shines on it as well some killer stuff by several other great Chicago players:

If you stay tuned to the link after the first song finishes, it will cycle through all three LPs. If you go to YouTube to watch/listen instead of staying here (click on "Cotton Crop Blues"), you can pick and choose which ones to listen to.

Yes! Saw Shines live several times -- one of the greats, with a voice that made the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.

Got all three when they came out, still have them. I got at least one in mono, might have been two, have to look and see which way, but I do recall not all 3 in stereo. They were my introduction to Otis Rush, among others. I was a freshman in college and they had some good blues LPs in the college bookstore.

Here's another great one, same label/same era. Includes "Mary Had a Little Lamb", later covered by SRV. I actually prefer Buddy's playing style during this period to his earlier stuff on Chess or his later, over-driven tone and (to my ear) overly-"busy" phrasing:

  • Buddy Guy - lead guitar, lead vocals
  • Otis Spann- piano
  • Wayne Bennet- rhythm guitar
  • Jack Myers - bass guitar
  • Donald Hankins, Aaron Corthen, Bobby Fields - saxophones
  • Lonny Taylor, Fred Below- drums, percussion

I wore my first copy of this one out.

Johnny Shines was a master. Too bad he never received the success his talent deserved.
Chicago the Blues Today! Is one of the greatest recorded projects of all time. Many big names and quit a few lesser known but talented artists are preserved on this classic session. Very well recorded, too. One for the ages.
