El Becko!! To quote him, "he knows his way around a Stratocaster", doesn't he? J.B Live at Ronnie Scott's -and the Rockabilly stuff he also did with Imelda May-is a must see (and hear) imho! But, I bet you knew!

I saw him at The Anthem in DC a few weeks ago. (The first show of the tour Depp joined him on) I really wish I could have seen some of the early tour shows in the SW/Texas where he was joined by folks like Ann Wilson or Billy Gibbons.

When I bought my ticket, Depp was not mentioned, so I was a bit disappointed to see his name w/Beck on the marquee. I do like the version of Lennon's Isolation they recorded together, but honestly, Depp has no business being on stage w/ those caliber of musicians. Thankfully, we basically got a full Beck solo set, then 4 tunes w/ Depp, then another 3 just Beck, then 1 more w/ Depp to close. Sure, Depp can strum simple rhythm guitar well enough, and his singing is passable for a bar band, but if his name wasn't Johnny Depp the movie star, he would have never been allowed anywhere near that stage. But, what Depp did do successfully was sell out any remaining empty seats w/ screaming girl fans. (A few bras were thrown on stage when he was singing! :p ) It was my 8th time seeing Beck, my alltime fav guitarist. The man just keeps getting better w/ age! I actually like his output (especially his playing) on the 4 albums from 99 to 2010 better than anything he's ever done, Wired and Blow by Blow included!! His playing style is really in a universe of it's own. Just mind blowing to witness! And a style where it's basically impossible to play the same thing exactly the same way twice. Such a delicate touch/feel approach w/ the whammy bar. The REAL twang bar king!! It just makes me giddy when I hear something I've never heard come from a guitar before....and he does it nightly!!

This was the setlists from my show.

Freeway Jam
Me and the Devil Blues(Robert Johnson cover)
Big Block
Caroline, No(Brian Wilson cover)
You Know You Know(Mahavishnu Orchestra cover)
Loose Cannon
Star Cycle
Cause We've Ended as Lovers
You Never Know
Brush With the Blues
Rumble(Link Wray & His Raymen cover)
This Is A Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr (w/Depp)
Isolation(John Lennon cover) (w/Depp)
Time(Dennis Wilson cover) (w/Depp)
Venus in Furs(The Velvet Underground cover) (w/Depp)
A Day in the Life(The Beatles cover)

Encore:
Corpus Christi Carol(Benjamin Britten cover)
Little Wing(The Jimi Hendrix Experience cover)
The Death and Resurrection Show(Killing Joke cover) (w/Depp)

**and of note, Beck's current bassist Rhonda Smith took advanced lessons from an old friend of mine, Anthony Setola who is coming out w/ a boxed set this winter that I wrote the forward to. ;) (y)

The addition of Depp to the show kept me home when he played just down the street from us at The Capitol in Port Chester, NY. I
have seen Jeff Beck there before. He is a masterful guitarist. Amazingly busy big right hand.

JB has that rarest of gifts; originality. He sounds like nobody else. Right from his early stuff with the Yardbirds, one knew when JB was playing. He really stands alone as an innovative musical explorer.
I literally would not walk across the street to see Johnny Depp.

^ Some of my fav playing of his in the last 30 years is on Roger Waters' album Amused to Death. He plays on about 1/3rd of the album and his parts are just exquisite! During some soft ethereal parts he does stuff like hit a single harmonic, then turn that into a 5-7 note melodic phrase w/ JUST the tremolo!!! 😲 Also LOVE his tone. He tends to run dual amps, mixing Marshall grit w/ Fender's piercing clean tones. I've basically copied that approach in a 5 watt per amp version in my mancave. ;)
