I am so happy to have found this forum!

Hello Everyone,

My name is Chris and I live in North Carolina. In 1983, after much begging, I received a 1969 Guild Starfire IV (SN# EL 2948) for my 15th birthday. At that time the guitar was in original but slightly worn condition. Twenty-six years later. it's showing signs of turning 40. My Starfire has always been a large part of my guitar playing life and I love it very dearly. I've spent thousands of hours playing it around the house, with friends, and on stage. It's seen it share of hard times. About 5 years ago it was knocked off it's stand by a friend's kid which popped the neck out of the glue joint. It took a while to get around to getting if fixed but it was and refretted at the same time. Here's a short list of stuff done to the guitar over the years with approximate dates.

1) Replaced Hagstrom bridge with after market "tun-o-matic." Two of the adjusting screws broke off the Hagstrom in the saddles and it could not be adjusted properly.
2) Lost pick-guard (circa 1987)
3) Fell from strap and busted input jack. Replaced/repaired with crummy plastic cover. (Circa 1989)
4) Volume and tone pots replaced (Circa 1991)
5) Pickups potted (waxed). This was by far the best thing done to help the guitar in a rock stage setting. (Circa 1993)
6) Neck reset and fingerboard refretted (Circa 2002) Also obtained a replacement Hagstrom bridge and installed it.

At this point in time I am doing some minor repairs to the instrument. The bridge pickup adjusting screws have been stripped for a long time and it was not possible to adjust the pickup height. I have been able to remove the pickup by removing the mostly and stripped and rusty screws that held in the pickup retaining ring. I'd like to replace the adjusting screws and the pickup retaining ring screws. Yesterday I took a trip to the local hardware store (Lowes) and looked through all the specialty screws and did not find a match for either. The pick-up adjusting screws measure about 1.25 inches (30mm) but the thread and pitch are very fine. Much finer than the available pan head machine screws. Does anyone knoe all of the exact specs for these screws? Maybe I can order some online. Same question for the black retaining rings screws.

I've included a few pics I took of the disassembly.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi, Chris. Welcome to LTG. Enjoyed your backstory on the SF IV. Cool guitar.

You may want to check web sources for the replacement screws you need. WD Music is one. There are many, many others. Sometimes, however, it's tough to find exact Guild replacement parts. For instance, treasure those pickup rings! :)

Welcome to LTG Chris. Someone here may know exactly what screws you need. If not, my advice would be to remove one of each and take them to a gunsmith. They would be able to determine the size and possibly sell you a replacement at a reasonable cost. Other options would be a well stocked hardware store, industrial supply house or of course anyone who repairs guitars. Good luck on your project.

Welcome to LTG, Chris. Sorry, I'm truly ignorant on anything involving electrons flowing through metal, but I love your old Starfire and glad to see you're working on it.

Hey Chris,

Thanks for sharing the stories. Glad you hung onto you beloved Starfire!

Although I've never had to mess with any of my screws, it doesn't surprise me that they're custom deals. You should be able to get anything you need from an industrial tool supplier. Find your local dealer for this company. They'll help you find a replacement. If they don't, a local machine shop can measure it, and you can Google the specs to buy it online.

Welcome to LTG!

Welcome, Chris!

My stock greeting to a newbie is, "Post well. Post often."
But you're off to a great start, so I'll save a little energy for someone who needs it. :)

Good luck!

Hi Chris,
What part of NC are you in? I live in Sherrills Ford, just West of Mooresville, North of Charlotte, on Lake Norman.
I also have a Starfire IV and an X500T - both great instruments. Welcome to the forum and good luck with your project!

Hello again!

I'd like to update you regrading my pickup adjusting screw project. FIrst, I'd like to thank everyone for their warm welcome and advice on this project. Finding a replacement locally wasn't possible. After consulting this forum I tried local superstar fastener powerhouse Automotive Fastenershttp://www.automotivefasteners.com/ . In the past I've been able to find odd stuff from them. I showed up with the adjustment screws and the pickup mounting ring screws on Monday and stumped the guy at the counter. He got out measurement tools and commented that the adjusting screws do not conform to any current SAE or Metric Standard that he is aware of. The pickup rings screws were identified as a #2 sheetmetal screw but he didn't have any in black.

I'd already formulated a backup plan. I found in the Stewart-McDonald catalog a likely winner for the adjustment height screws
item# 4386 http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Hardwar...s_springs/1/Pickup_Height_Screws.html#details

and for the mounting ring screws
item# 3359-B http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Hardwar...s_springs/Humbucker_Mounting_Ring_Screws.html

My order arrived yesterday and I got the screws out made a quick comparison to the originals.

4386 was close but not quite the number of threads per inch. It worked out OK though. At the bottom of the pickup foot (on the underside) is a spring nut http://automotivefasteners.thomasne...uts-inch-nuts/spring-steel-nuts/2422?&seo=110
and because it doesn't have multiple thread turns it easily accepted the screw. The pickup mounting rings screws were about 1/16" shorter than the originals but worked perfectly.

Everything is put back together and works quite well and looks good!

And finally, as long as I am sharing. Here is me with the STIV on stage in Boone, NC just over 20 years ago. Note masking tape holding pickup selector switch in place. And yes, that was really my hair :)

Not THE Stiv? A nickname I take it? He does have the Stiv Bator's look but looks way too tall. :) Your hair, however, makes you look like Pat Methany gone grunge!

Thanks for posting.

I'm guessing STIV is for Starfire IV. I could be wrong.\

Anyhow, I've found that DiMarzio makes a pretty accurate replacement for Guild pickup height screws. They also even look a bit closer to the originals.

I don't think I've ever heard Stiv Bators and Pat Metheny discussed in the same paragraph before: ) Much to the chagrin of the rest of the guys in that band, I still have all of my hair although I don't currently use Jello in it :)

I am glad I found this forum - It's turning into a very helpful and fun group!

Thanks
Chris
