Hello all,

While I was adjusting the neck relief, I noticed that someone wrote their initials inside truss rod cavity. The initials are "JT" The X-170 was made in 2001 - Westerly. A trivial concern, but, could this have been done at the factory - verifying neck relief? Have you seen this on any of yours? I checked my other Guild archtops (except the X-500) and found no initials. Maybe this was done by a guitar tech from the previous owner ( I bought this second hand).

My Corona D25 also have initials, along with the 70s jumbos...A bit of a Guild tradition methinks...Steffan

This was discussed once before. If you can wade through all the "veers" in the thread, I think "Worked in Westerly" answers your question.

Chaz,
It seems Tacoma had continued the idea of neck-setters scribing their own initials onto the rod recess. There are many signed as "JT" , toward the end of the Westerly era.
That suggests that "JT" got around :)

Those initials would be Steve Tongas neck setter extraordinaire who set necks from approximately 85 till 2001. Of course the initials are correct but the name was changed to protect the innocent.Riddle me this what has 9 legs and sets necks?

By the way, IMHO, all you guys at Westerly were trully extraordinary! Each time I look at my X-170, I marvel at the quality, fit, craftmanship and finish that was put into its construction (not that Im dismissing the quality of my X-150 and X-700). Despite all of the innuendos by some (not in this forum) about post Fender owned Guild quality, I don't see a single shred of inferior craftmanship in this example that would warrant those claims. My hats off to all those that kept true to their craft near the end despite knowing the fate of their future with Fender owned Guild! :D

Even though Fender owned it the same people were still making them. They couldn't buy the workers, just the company.

Agreed. You folks were guild & still are the real guild (which is now basically a logo owned by a corporate behemoth, which I don't consider "real"). I only own westerly & hoboken guilds because they're topnotch & the real deal--they're also the only guild's I'll ever own. Great guitars made by great craftspeople!
