Hi All,

If you had to choose between a Tacoma built F-30 w/D-TAR (Red Spruce/Mahogany), a Takamine TAN76 Supernatural made in Japan (Spruce/Rosewood), or a Larrivee OM-09 (Spruce/Rosewood), which one would you choose and why?

I'm primarily a strummer and play contemporary praise and worship.

I think I will have to make some decisions soon. Your input about these guitars is appreciated. It's so hard because they all have their own distinctive voice. I know I have to decide, but I'd like your opinions/experience with these guitars.

Thank you.

For strumming, the red spruce should be a good choice.
I like Tacoma built Guild guitars in general, so my choice would be that one.

I don't know all the guitars but it looks like the F-30 is the only one with electronics...does that make a difference? Assuming they all cost the same I'd always lean toward the Guild because I like Guilds and the F-30 is a great size and sound. I strum and finger pick and really like rosewood but I've never really had a good hog guitar. If I had the opportunity to play each one, I'd go with the one that sounded best on the songs I usually play. Of course if I could get someone to play them for me as well as play them myself that would be even better since I could hear the guitar as a player and a listener. This probably isn't much help but that's what I'd do. jgm

I've never played a Takamine that I liked, but I've never played one of their more expensive guitars either. In general, to me Takamines sound OK plugged in, dead unplugged. A lot of people gig with them because their electronics are rugged.

Larrivees are good sounding, well built guitars, nice players, but I've never played one that I just had to have. I've noticed a lot of Larrivee owners don't care for their OMs.

The F30 is a darn nice guitar, I played a Tacoma built one recently, and liked it a lot. Played nice, sounded great.

OK, now I'm definitely a Guild guy, but the OM//OOO size Martins really get me excited. I think they are Martins best guitars, and that's saying a lot. I think in the size and price range you are looking at you should consider them. They have a zillion models, and it can get confusing, but it would be worthwhile to check them out.

Like some of the other replies I don't know all the guitars you've tried. I brought a 1992 Yamaha APX-10, Takamine EG455SC and a Guild D-30 to church one day. Experimenting with the soundboard we found the Yamaha and Takamine most convienient to plug directly into the sound system. The Guild we used a mic on a boom stand placed in front of the soundhole.
Personally I liked the sound of the Guild best, once we finally dialed in the mic. However, for recording purposes the Yamaha seemed to have the better overall quality and could be adjusted easier from the sound guy's perspective, since he's working with six overhead mics to capture flute, sax, clarinet, french horn, trumpet, piano, drums and bass along with guitar and vocal.
The Yamaha has a different electronic set-up than most others including Taylor and Takamine. I would have liked to compare a Guild acoustic/electric to see where it would place. They all seem to have their own voice and you may find one you like that may not,,,,,,,,,,,,,shudder,,,,,,,,,,be a GUILD!!!!!!!! oldflattop,,,,,aka: Willie

Why are a wise man and a wise guy opposites?
