It would depend on who was there, the "mood," and what guitar I had on hand... but "Field Behind the Plow" by Stan Rogers is one of my favorites to play and sing. Or "Caledonia" by Dougie Maclean...
Man! I love both of those songs, Dave! Soundclips?

"American Pie" is a crowd pleaser, so I'd lean toward that one. If that felt too pretentious for the venue, I'd do "Little Red Riding Hood," because I like the wolf howling parts and because it is an underplayed classic that people enjoy remembering.

The song I'm liking myself on most lately is a Springsteen-esque version of "Erie Canal."

Thanks Guildmark... unfortunately, no recording gear... and my digital cameras are too old to have decent sound capabilities. Maybe someday... or, live in Arlington next year!

I go with something Like Rocketman, or Nature's Way - sometimes Colin Hays' Beautiful World if near the water ( if you don't know his recent solo work do your self a favor....) or his I Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You if the audience is set up for it but if they are in that frame of mind I can't resist singing Vincent so it's a toss up.

If the crowd is in a clapping mood then Something So Strong by Crowded House will get you called back up !!!

BUT - You asked for One -

Linda Goes To Mars - John Prine

LOL

Hi,

Today I'd go in with "Wherefore And Why" by Gordon Lightfoot, or maybe my own "Free Spirit"

"True Love Will Find You In The End" by Daniel Johnston if solo acoustic.... if I was invited to play with a band, probably "Dead Flowers" by the Stones.

No worries zz, we reserve the right to ask the same questions tomorrow so everything is new again.

And as Geezers some of us won't even remember it was asked before unless we have figured out and use the Search functions.

Assuming I had no practice time and had to just get up and play, it would be "Friend Of The Devil" by the Dead.

It's the only song that is so drilled into my memory that I wouldn't forget any thing and can play in any condition!

I guess I would play "Pancho and Lefty" by Townes Van Zandt. I seem to get compliments on that one.

Jambalaya. . . but "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Angel from Montgomery" are awfully good, too.

Nice! Can't go wrong there.

"Friend of the Devil" is a good one to play solo... that & "Ripple" are both on my "to learn" list.

Oh .... probably Stills's "4 & 20" or McCartney's "Blackbird", given how long I've known them - back to my college days.
- Doesn't mean I'd get the lyrics right.

I was assuming this was a solo...but if I could play with friends & do harmonies, 4&20 and "Friend Of The Devil" would definitely be good choices! I play mando on "Friend". "As Tears Go By" is another of my faves, I have the violin part worked out on the mando.
