Of course, I built a Monkeemobile and a Munsters Car in the 60's.

Wow Nuuska, I didn't know about G scale until now. So a gauge of 45 mm . . . . about 1 1/2 feet. right? Were your locos live steam? Electric?

From the LBG site, those locomotives look nicely detailed. And I was surprised to read that Lionel makes some G scale stuff. Do you own the unusual loco pictured on your post? How would you classify it? Lovely . . . but this scale is not cheap!!

45mm is 1-3/4 inches - 450mm = 45cm would be 1 1/2 feet

LGB is all electric - weatherproof, too - one spring I found my first locomotive had hibernated under the snowbank - still works - never done anything but hard play - it is over 20 years old now.

Now and then LGB co-operated wih other makers - like Aster - and produced limited series all metal engines with even better details. Ther's one real-steamer - burns natural gas. Some other makers make G-scale real-steamers, too.

When I was a kid, I lived a mile from a Hobby Shop. Models, Estes Rockets, Cox-powered cars. I spent all my paper route money there. My interest in models started off with cars, and later shifted to WW2 kits. I got pretty damn good with an air brush. I’ve been tempted to get back into kits.
I sold this Revell model new in the box a few years ago:

For my generation, it was all about GI Joes (with the Kung Fu grip), Estes Rockets and Revell models of cars. Also, the kid with the gas powered model airplane on a cord that you could fly in a circle around you, was the hit of the neighborhood. Like this one but much smaller:
