Guys!!! I just got it this morning. 2x2 headstock, sunburst....missing the original Bridge and Pickup/pots knobs. Can anybody help me restore this???? It serial number SD101. THEE first Jetstar bass ever made according to the serial numbers online.

Hello Baz,

Don't want to spoil the party but that's an incorrect interpretation of the serial number list. The serial number system with the 2-letter prefix was introduced during 1965; not even at the beginning of 1965.
The Jet-Star Bass was introduced towards the end of 1964 and there were definitely Jet-Star basses made before the introduction of the 'new' serial number system. The basses that were made before that have 5-digit serial numbers that are lower than # 46606. It's still a cool 'number' to have but it's not the first Jet-Star Bass

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

WOW!!! I was just going by the serial numbers on the internet. They all seem to agree that the first serial number for a Jet Star is SD101.
Hi Baz, welcome aboard. As a new guy, you may not know this, but Hans literally "wrote the book" about Guilds from '53-'78, and is working on a second volume. He actually has build logs from Hoboken and Westerly. We all consider him to be the final authority on serial numbers because of that.
I think most of the internet listings are drawing from flawed information that Guild put out in the first place. Hans has mentioned many times that pretty much all the internet listings are flawed.
I didn't think you were "diss-ing" his reply, but only showing why you were honestly misled. In any case I just thought it would be nice to verify Hans' bona fides, in case you didn't know who he was.

To answer your rhetorical question, you know less than the author of The Guild Guitar Book who just answered your question. What you, and most of those dating sites, need to understand is that in 1965 Guild changed their serial numbering scheme. Prior to 1965 they used a single pool of numbers for all instruments. Then they switched to a model specific prefix scheme.

Your JetStar is certainly the first JetStar to get a prefixed serial number and the number was assigned in 1965. However since there were JetStars made in 1964 which would have 5 digit serial numbers, yours isn't the first.

Sorry.
