Last week Howard posted here about the arrival of his new CD. I was delighted
to get this news and eagerly anticipated its arrival in the mail.

I'm not going to gush and offer any more superlatives than I may have already done
elsewhere - judge for yourself. I will simply say that there is something about the
sound of an acoustic guitar... when my parents gifted me with a $15 pawn shop
cheapo one pre-teen Christmas, well... my neighborhood friend's Mom called my
parents wondering why I had abandoned the usual neighborhood social activity...
and my Dad would get out of his bed late on a school night and tell me "how about
giving it a rest for a while?".

When I first saw Leo Kottke perform... 198? 197?... he took the stage at a small club
in Boston with nothing but an acoustic guitar - sealed with duct tape on the back
as I recall. Good glory! Well before I ever became a parent, this was one moment
where I was in awe of human possibilities - a flesh and blood person can make such
a sound?!

Hearing Dave Van Ronk play ragtime for the first time. Hearing Guy Van Duser swing
through a big band arrangement all by himself. Hearing Howard's Crossing Crystal Lake
as the "on hold" music at a music store.

Little moments that have rekindled the spark or fueled the fire of the part of me that
is so intertwined with the acoustic guitar. Those flames have been stoked once again
with hearing Howard's new CD. He was "in the moment" with his guitar and it was beautifully
captured by technology for the nourishment of guitar guys like me.
