How many X-500 Palladins were made?

Does anyone know? Over at the Gretsch forum someone said that only 12 were made, 6 natural and 6 sunburst. I have never seen a sunburst one and have only seen evidence of a couple more. Anyone know? Hans?

Hello Don,

Which version of the X-500 Paladin were they talking about?

Sincerely,

If we are talking about the actual Dave model
THEPAL%7E2.JPG

Very few maybe none other than this one,

Standard X500T Paladins which are different than the above model, then quite a few. I mean not thousands but they are out there.

This one used to be mine, I sold it to a member here. I just never connected with it. But he loves it.

Hi Hans, always good to hear from you even when you are pointing out that I am mistaken (that seems to happen more and more these days -- being mistaken, that is). LOL

I wasn't aware of the difference or that there were more than the one model. The context was in discussing current big body hollow bodies with P-90s and several were wishing that the X-500T was still available. Someone brought up the statistics that I mentioned. The number quoted seemed really low and I have never heard of a sunburst.

The X500T is pretty cool, but like Billy points out, the one they really built for Dave (I believe it was called the X550P...?) is the one I wish would have gone into production - as close to an actual 50's X500 as a new guitar could get, except for the Duncan P90's. I pawed Dave's, and they really got it right on that one - I'd leave my own old guitars at home for something like that too.

At least one, other than Dave's own, was built of those, Buffalo Bros had it for sale on their website.

The X500T was basically a standard modern X500 with two P90's (the neck one too close to the fingerboard, btw...) and a Bigsby.

Well, other than the 2 built as prototypes (or just as courtesies for Dave G) those low numbers make more sense of how hard my search for a 500t has been. Not up to a year long quite yet, but the first anniversary approaches and I'm still looking!

Hello Don,

So far I have not been able to come up with a reliable number for the total of X-500Ts that were made during the last few years of Westerly production, since the serial numbers reflect the total amount of X-500s that were made, including the X-500Ts. The same is true for the short period that the model was produced in Corona. So, all I can do is make a note of all the individual ones that I come across and in time I might be able to give you an idea how many X-500Ts were actually produced.

Danny,

You didn't respond to my posting in your original thread. I had one for you not too long ago!

I spoke to Buffalo about it, and they were pretty certain only those two were built.

They actually had another one on order, then after two years they finally got notice that Fender were not going to build more of them.

I actually asked my local Fender dealer to ask the Custom Shop if they would consider building one as a one-off, but they never responded. So I am back to considering either a 500T or a vintage 500/550, whichever comes first when I happen to have the money for it...

It is maybe unlikely, but not entirely unthinkable, that we may have an archtop revival which may spur Fender into reissuing these guitars. At least we can hope...

I have to defer to the experts on the sound post question. As for the Bigsby, my evidence is purely anecdotal, I have never seen one with P-90s but without a Bigsby. In the price lists back then it was listed with. But I guess there could have been special orders, and it is of course a simple thing to replace later....
