I was watching the Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus tonight and happened to notice, during Taj Mahal’s set, that Jesse Ed Davis’ frets looked awfully low. Unfortunately I couldn’t find the song where they gave a nice long look at his fingering, but you can catch glimpses in this one, I think. Is it just me?

Given the excessive wear on the fretboard that wouldn’t surprise me. Wished the guy was in tune though, I like me some Taj Mahal but that out of tune guitar was rough to listen to.

I thought this was going to be about the singer's voice in the Oak Ridge Boys ;]

I always thought this was one of the high points of the Circus, a truly inspired performance.

He was an amazing player, hit all the notes I wanted to hear.

The frets on the Tele were probably stock, and worn.

You can see his fingers/frets pretty well @ 2:00, they look ok to me, but I have a '74 Strat, and I really fretted over leaving the original frets in place, and decided to shave the heavy poly lacquer finish off with single edged bladed instead, a gnarly job.

Davis was one of the best things on Gene Clark's No Other album--he also played on and produced White Light. Here he plays with Gene at McCabe's--I can't believe I missed this one back then as I usually made the effort to see Clark anytime he played in Southern California:
