I figure some of you might appreciate, or at least identify, with this:

I bought this '96 S-100 awhile back and the pickups didn't have covers. I decided I'd rather have them so I found a couple Seymour Duncan covers and spent some time today installing them.

Now, I've never done anything like this so I went out on the internets and did some looking around. If you're like me you know what this can be like -- you might be a meticulous person concerned with every detail and get frustrated with the conflicting information and advice you come across. I figured out what I needed to do (it's fairly simple, despite some of the poor descriptions of the process I found) and dove into it.

In the end, I got the covers soldered on, cleaned up the fretboard, polished the wood (what a difference!), and put it all back together.

I took some pics to document the process, but all I had to use was my cell phone. If any of you looked at the pictures I posted before you'll notice the difference: those were taken with an 8MP camera. So the before and afters don't really do it justice.

Anyway, here's a day in the life of my Guild S-100:

And if you want to see the gallery of pics from before:

I have yet to plug it into my amp, only the tuner so far. It worked fine for tuning and intonation. Cross your fingers as I plug in the Marshall.

Late!

PS: Any advice/system for pole height adjustment? or should I just experiment?

Update: I plugged in, played with the switches and settings on the guitar and amp, nothing new. Then at one point I got some feedback I don't remember getting before. Bad potting job maybe? My imagination? Hmmm...

It's possible that you disturbed the wax potting when heating up the plate and cover for the solder job. On the other hand, the cover could be on loose enough to vibrate with the volume your Marshall puts out. To be positive, it looks really nice.

Well, the feedback did seem to happen when the Marshall was up enough to vibrate the floor, but only when not playing and when facing the amp.

Some tiny flakes of wax came out when I unscrewed the poles and a couple tiny pieces from the side when I scraped off the black tape. Didn't think it was enough to matter. I tried to solder it as quickly as possibly to minimize the heat.

Hmm, don't know. These are the details that bother me. So many.

I have a nagging feeling I'll redo it, and then there's a chance I'll do it again after that. Could be that one piece of tape wasn't enough to keep the cover from vibrating against the pickup. If I do it again I'll get wax to use.

I'll plug in the guitar again sometime soon to try to figure out what the problem is.

All advice is welcome because the info on the internets is annoying to sift through.

Of course I could just totally redo the wax, right? Dunk 'em?

Carefully. You need to get the right temp so you don't melt the bobbins.

Just played it for a bit. No feedback on 3 or 4 on the amp volume. I'll experiment more later. Trivia night at the bar!

I am looking for the Volume and Tone knobs for a 1970 Guild S100, do you have any ideas where to look.

My e-mail is gzmann@aol.com

Thank you in advance for any help

Wow, that thread seems so long ago now!

I don't really know where to find them. Sorry. I looked around once too and came up empty-handed.

It looks like Hans might have some gold ones left.

You could shoot him ("hansmoust") a message too. Maybe he has some info.

Good luck!
