Going through another thread, Gardman (aka Dave) was talking about the most he ever spent on a guitar, which prompted me to go ahead with this proposition, for those willing to disclose this type of information of course...
The question is: Which guitar (acoustic or electric) have you spent the most on and how much was it?

I, for one, went a few hundreds over what Dave spent, my record high being $1500.00 on my 000-28.

Next?...

I invested in a ridiculously expensive old Gibson J-200 once, and sold it for a ridiculous price. I saw it later on the web for a more ridiculous price. Didn't sound that great, but it possessed that desirability catnip to irresistible to collectors.

Kind of a tough one to answer if you’re a geezer and start taking inflation into consideration. Blowing $400 in 1966 was a huge wad of cash! But to make this simple I’m going to say that my next guitar will be near the top of the list. I’m saving up for a new F-512 to tame the 12 string GAS once and for all. 8)

Well taking FX into account my Westerly D55 cost me about $2k USD ($2700 NZD), second hand. At that time a D28 was $3895.00 NZD new and a J45 was $4500 NZD new. Need to bear in mind there's not many Guilds for sale over here, so rarity and desirability enter into the mix. That D55 was thought to be a bit of a bargain actually !!

Now Dane, do you expect us to believe that a new F-512 will actually "tame the 12-string GAS once and for all" or will it only increase the symptoms?

I thought my F512R had it covered...until I played my F112....notice I said "my'...They sit so nicely and have their own sweet unique voice, I guess like all the other Guilds...  Steffan

$1595 and tax for my F65. Closeout discount. I paid more for that guitar than I did for a lot of my cars! I had RX-7 Acquisition Syndrome for quite a few years.

Seems like lately..not too far. Two nice Gruhn Guilds for the taking, but I've gotten cold feet these days.

So true... adjusting for inflation and intangibles, my D-35 was my most expensive guitar purchase. I paid $300 (w case) in Jan 1973... more than a month's salary for me at the time (I was 17). A little inflation calculation gives an estimated price in 2009 dollars of ~$1550. Best $300 I ever spent!

My collection isn't the biggest, but I did throw down 600 for my D25. Will not be getting another for quite some time (unless I win the lottery...better start playing), but if I plan for an F30 or 18 series or a little Gibby, then I would expect to pay 2-3 times that amount.

For years the most I spent on a guitar was the $495 I spent in 1973 for a late 40s Epi Zephyr Deluxe Regent (later traded even up for my Mark V). My X-170 cost $777 in '88 (I just ran across the receipt). However, since I now have a little disposable income, I spend more than I should. Most expensive, 1975 Artist Award. I paid a premium price ($6000) because finding a 35 year old guitar in its condition is rare. It is literally in showroom shape, IMO, no fret wear, no dings, nada. This year, between buying guitars and amps, giving guitars away (four of them) and maintenance on existing instruments, I've probably spent $10,000 on what is now only a hobby. When I was a struggling musician, I didn't even make that much in a year :)

To me its a hobby too, One I MUCH enjoy and get alot of pleasure from....AND it has helped ME in ways I never expected....GOOD feelings and EXCITEMENT, pleasure and Joy...hard to put a price on that....in some ways 'priceless'. Not to mention....YOU good folks! :D
So what I'd spend is direcly related to 'whatever I CAN" in a feasable way. If I ran into some 'easy cash' ( a small lottery win, some windfall, selling off something of value that I dont need, etc) I WOULD spend 'big'. That Artist award you mention Brad.....If I were faced with THAT possibility,...I would HAVE TO FIND A WAY!........certainly wouldnt let that one slip by! SOMEDAY....A top shelf guitar is in my future....(Well, I hope so). So yea, ...its all relative. right now I just try to get as much technical info I can on the particular guitars I like...inform myself in advance.....think and consider..and WAIT in HOPE! But AS I WAIT........I PRACTICE !!! :D IT'S ALL GOOD!!!!! SG!

1500 euro a few years back for a Gibson ES295. Sold it with a little profit when I got my X160. I'm a very happy camper now with most guitars between 700 and 1200 euro. In my book that's a reasonable price for a fine player's guitar.

My last GAS attack cost me $1250.00 for my 2005 D-55 but I sold my 1991 JF30-12 for $1200 and that money filtered it's way toward the D-55. It passed through the JF-55 that I sold to a forum member.
Confusing, yes but not much out of pocket expense for the 3 way trade.
In 1981, I purchased my Martin D-35 new for $860.00 case included.
That is the best deal that I have made on a guitar.
The JF-30-12 cost about the same amount but that was 10 years later.
I sold it for a nice little profit and invested it again in the JF-55 which soon became my D-55.

I went through a GAS attack phase 2 years ago where I bought and sold 3 Pas Rim guitars that were all under $800.00 each.
I ended up with an OM size Blueridge BR-63 that cost me $4,50 case included.
By the way, this is a very nice little guitar.

OK now I have a headache trying to figure out what I just said.
I think that I will just go to my weekly jam session and unwind,
TMG.

well, I spent $321.19 on my fender squier bass (came with 15 watt amp with 8 inch speaker. ) plus $80 for the pickguard. It's a one off custom (due to the location of the pickups being diff on 20th ann.) so roughly $420- let's say $100 for the amp= $320 sorta well spent (I didn't have my B-301 at the time)- It was free. Anyway, I'm veering. alot. I should probably stop now.

I saved $1,100 off the price of a Duesenberg Starplayer TV Outlaw buying it from a dealer in Ireland compared to what they're being offered for new on eBay from U.S. dealers simply by asking how much it would cost to ship it to the States. The shipping wasn't cheap, but the guitar's price included a Value Added Tax that wasn't applicable if the guitar was shipped to the States, hence the savings. When it arrived, I showed it to a photographer friend of mine was so smitten with it that he demanded we take it to his studio to shoot photos of it.
