Sadly no pics, it's in the shop for a setup (I like .11s with a wound G). It's a gorgeous 60's Starfire II, Cherry Red and sooooo pristine I couldn't believe it. Nice original 60's Hardshell case with the "Guild" metal badge next to the handle, Harp tailpiece on it (I got away from Bigsby lust after totally grooving on the Harp with my SFXII). With the dirty power in my house, these 'buckers are perfect, no hum like a P-90 would have, not as squashy strong like a Seth 'bucker would have. Well, at least that's been the rule with the SFXII again. Also the XII is a double mickey mouse ear cutaway, so the classy sharp one-cutaway Venetian is great. Gets jazzy with neck only and rolling off the highs a bit, strums rhythm in the middle position, and allows me to embarass myself with the bridge position with my lame blues solos. I couldn't be happier, and the best part is no money left the wallet since I traded a bass for it - who am I kidding, I'm no bassist! Heck, I'm barely a guitarist! When it comes home next week I'll take pics and find out what the serial number is (totally forgot to write it down, had a Hoboken label and the era-appropriate Chesterfield pillar inlay on the headstock with "Starfire II Special" or something like that written on the label). WHEE!

Edit - hold on, this is odd, looked up pics of the SFIIs on the internet and mine is different. Mine has a master volume control (definitely a guild vol knob tho) on the treble bout where the cutaway is, and the tuners are grover open back tuners (really nice ones in my opinion) that look original, no extra holes on the back of the headstock like the replacements on my SFXII. Plus the bridge has a rosewood base but adustable metal saddles on top for each string. HMM! Is my memory going that quickly, am I totally confusing it with the '67 SFIV I was playing just before it, or what? I'm half tempted to go back to the store now just to confirm what the heck I just got.

Re: Finally got a 6-string Starfire!

i just called the shop and they said I wasn't imagining it, there is indeed a master volume control there and both that and the tuners were special options, thus the "Starfire II Special" written on the Hoboken label.

Oh crap.

Until Hans arrives, anyone whip out their book and check to see if there's an entry for this, or maybe it was a one-off?

I looked around like mad and I found a Starfire that had the same tuners as mine does -

But mine definitely has the HB-1 buckers, so it's after 1963. Must...wait...till...setup...complete!

Hello Jahn,

A master volume would make it a 'Special'. The open backed Grover tuners were standard during that particular period.
Here's a clear photo:

If you have the serial number, I can find it back in the official ledgers and see if it was part of a bigger batch or just a one-off.

Sincerely,

It's back from the shop! He said it barely needed any setup actually, it was in "player's shape" and he just popped some .11s with a wound G on there as I like it. I guess I wasn't imagining things, it says "Special" and it has a Master Volume. But the hollowbody actually makes this my instant fave bedroom level guitar to fiddle with, so resonant! Anyhow here's the pics, I'll try a vid plugged in when the family timing is right as usual. Hans, serial numbers in the pics, any assistance on dating/history on this one is welcome!

Hello Jahn,

Is this the one that was for sale at Rudy's? That's where I saw it not too long ago.

Anyway, it's from 1965 and the 'Special' designation is for the non standard Master Volume.

Nice one!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

It was at Rudy's? I did the swap while fixing up my bass over at 30th Street Guitars. I guess Have Guild, Will Travel!

1965, very cool. Is this a batch or one off do you think?

Consider me on a Starfire Moratorium now - have at it, boys!

I sneaked in some play time tonight to give you an idea of how the SFII sounds - not surprisingly, sounds like my SFXII but with 6 strings and a bit more woody and resonant. Plus, I have to stand behind the amp because it'll feedback on you in a second, hehe. Anyhow, one of the older tunes I remembered from my youth since I was in a hurry, but since getting this one was inspired by Feist, I tossed a little Secret Heart in the beginning.

I'm Not having too much trouble with my SF III, worst seems to be when the amp is on & the git is on the stand next to it. Winds up all on it's own once in a while just sitting here.

I watched Smitty, my instructor, move my SF III around to different angles from the amp. He showed me 4 or 5, maybe six, distinct feedback tones.

At times I'm starting to let the feedback "Rave On" a little & go with it. Volume set pretty low keeps it tolerable, chicken hearted I guess.

What a great snag, Jahn! Nice shape for a '65. A Master volume setup is just what I'm thinking of doing as well with my '65.

What I really like to do is find the specific notes that will start to feedback if you're standing in a certain place-angle-position, especially the ones you can bend up to at the end of a phrase or a lick.
Feedback can be fun! Feedback is your friend!
