Good'n Steffan. I expect too many don't know the wealth of fine Australian country music, as exemplified by Slim Dusty.

:D THANK YOU Steffan :D You sure picked a good one. Slim Dusty is legend here, for many a good reason. his rendition here gives you an idea why. It nice to see him playing his Martin ( of course, a Guild would have been better! 8) ) these days so many Aussie artists seem to be playing Matons and Cole Clarks ( both really fine brands) that its odd to see an Aussie playing a Martin. Fair enough though, Its best to play and promote ones national brands.
Mate, have you seen the youtube of 'Liem Clancy- Band played waltzing Matilda" ( its to the right of the Slim dusty one you posted) EXCELLENT redition of a timeless story of war and its effects on far too many involved. It's an Eric Bogle song, GREAT one to play as well. I Love it.
Then if youre not blue enough....treat yourself to "Tom Waits- waltzing Matilda live 1977" a fabulous rendition there! Same story as waltzing matilda, except in Toms version, a romantic soul kills himself instead of going to jail for stealing. Some Powerful stuff! Well delivered!
Thanks for sending over some Slim! MOST welcome

There's a fingerstyle guitarist I talk to over on the Acoustic Guitar Forum who did a magnificent rendition of Waltzing Matilda... Let me know what you think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yE3uwQsV7I I get goose bumps.

When I was a kid I was told a waltzing matilda's a 'roo. It's about a hobo brewin' up his tea by the waterhole (billabong). That's the offical G rated interpretation anyway. Wiki actually has a fascinating etymology:

A real protest song by their account!

Interesting to see an honest-to-God Aussie playing this. The emphasis and rhythm in the chorus is definitely different from the usual US version. Wonder if that is him or a more national characteristic. Thanks Steffan.

Chaz, I'm from New Orleans, born and raised, I'm an American immigrant! so I speak 'Australian 'as a second language
Been here nearly 25 years now and STILL some of the language befuddles me.......still , I love it. Some great turns of a phrase here, and heaps of great history.
That song is so much a part of the Aussie psyche that i dare not explain it in full! but if you Google "meaning of Waltzing Matilda" the first one to pop up on Google is "Suite 101.com" THERE you will find a full and meaningful explanation of the verb-age contained. I sure learned a bit more reading it all there myself. But in short, a "Matilda" is a "swagmans '( a wandering hobo-type soul) "swag' ( a sort of bedroll and crude tent rolled into one). A good image is that of a Confederate infantry soldier, his bedroll tied at one end, hung on his shoulder, and draped across his chest. THAT rolled up bedroll is a 'Matilda' ,an affectionate term for a swag from men in great need of some feminine companionship. To 'Waltz' her is to travel the countryside with 'her' embraced affectionately across ones chest.
It is a real anti-authority song, a song of independence, and a cry to the struggling poor ( the 'battlers') to stick it up the rich and powerful.
and you're right Spider, Slims version is the real deal...OR I could say......A 'Fair dinkum", 'ridgy didge', True Blue', micky mouse ,version. ( all that means. ....it's the real deal)
Whew!
