I go upstairs and my wife asks me: "Hey, you want to buy an electric guitar? I think we need one. There's a song I want to do and you need to play electric on it..."

Wait, what? Am I still sleeping?

So good. So budget is small, but I am going to head down to GC over next couple weeks to see if they got any MIC Guilds.

Honestly, I don't even know what LTG electric guitar section to post a thread in seeking advise, as there are 2 on this forum...

:)

You know we have more free advice than you can handle.

With regards to your "which forum" I have a couple of comments. If feedback is a problem and not a feature of your performance it is easier to control the feedback on a solid body instrument. Body damage and repair are different for solid vs. hollow. Whether true, or not, I act like my hollow basses are more fragile than my solid ones. If you ever want to play without an amp you will be happier with a hollow instrument.

If price is a driver, you can avoid answering any of my questions and go to the Guild site and only look at the choices with a MSRP under $1,000. That narrows things down quickly.

My attempts to convince Mrs. Fro. she wanted an electric have failed miserably but she will admit she likes the double cutaway Starfires. Perhaps you show Mrs. WW the Guild page and see if she has a preference?

I have always liked the JetStar body shape. My local GC has no Guild electrics at the moment.
I really like the Epi Viola bass I got back in late December, so I might consider Epiphone as well. Good quality for the $.
But not really in a hurry, so will see what Guilds are about...Thanks Frono.

yeah, thinking solid body too due to feedback potential etc. This is and will be a small venue we will play in so want to keep it tame.

I also like the Aristocrat body. These all seem to be Newark St MIC electrics. I bet they are well made...

"We need an electric guitar" can mean a lot of things. Is there a certain sound you're after? Because not all electrics produce all sounds. If you're looking for a twangy Strat or Tele sound, then that's a whole different ballgame than (for example) a fat Les Paul sound. If you describe what you're after then we can help us guide you to what will get you there.

Best bang for your buck that covers all bases is honestly a PRS SE w/ true split coil tapping. Used for under $600 legitimately gets you $1500 worth of guitar. They are very high quality for offshore builds. (Regrettably, much more than recent offshore Guilds from all the reviews I've read) The ones I'm taking about are made in Korea and assembled in the US. And w/ a veneer top you get a gorgeous flame top guitar that to a laymen looks just like one of their $5,000+ guitars.

Does it need to be a Guild? Telecasters are cheap, dependable, easy to play, and versatile.

And if you'd like to keep your money in North America, there are some nice Mexican Fender Telecasters, and Godin makes great solid-body electrics starting at under $800.

Definitely gonna keep an eye on the LTG buy/sell page, as affordable electrics do pop up from time to time. Should have bought that Detenator that was for sale a while back, it was super affordable and looked very cool. These on reverb now are 800 and up.

If you find one of these, I suggest you to check it out: Gibson SG Special 60's Tribute.

I love mine! By now it is my Number one. (see my signature).

It is quite lightweight, not neck heavy, feels good in my hands. Very versatile tone-wise. I love the look, it is very stripped down to it's essentials, and the matte black just is cool. Neck is a pleasure to play.

I got mine used but in mint condition for around USD 550 (converted), which is a very good price IMO. I think new it was around 1000 USD.

Here is what Gibson says:

Here is a short review:

And here is Greg Koch:

The only question that remains: Is it suitable for church?

Much of the electric guitar sound is the result of the amp and amp settings. Can you identify the amp you will be using?

In terms of overall best value and tone variations I strongly suggest a SF1 SC or SF1 DC. To my knowledge all the SF1 SC's are a maple body with sound block under the bridge. The SF1 DC's come in maple or mahogany. Maple is a little brighter and mahogany a little warmer. The DC model is also semi hollow so has a solid block of wood running through the middle. The SF1 DC in red has mahagony and the SF1 DC in Walnut are maple. I would avoid the models with the Guildsby as your experience has been with instruments with a fixed bridge.

The advantage of the SF1 series it has push/pull volume controls that allow you to select either a single coil or humbucker tone. Also the vol/tone control of each pickup allows you to balance the sound level out when selecting one pickup in single coil mode and another in humbucker mode.

I really like my transparent red SF1 DC. I have vintage equivalents but find the fit, finish and flexibility of the red SF1 DC to be the best of them all! The model doesn't have a Guildsby vibrato and that is rare for me as most my guitars have a vibrato but the red SF DC is one of my favorites!

New under $500 and like new under $400. Case or Gigbag extra.

- - - - - Perhaps you show Mrs. WW the Guild page and see if she has a preference?

I just adore these wife names - Mrs. WW - Mrs Fro . . . 😍

This blues duo from Harlem NY - Satan & Adam - had two tours in Finland. I was their truck driver - roadie - FOH-guy - tour manager. Good memories. Very interesting duo. Mr Satan was an older black guy and he had an old Ampeg guitar ( - missing one tuner knob 😂 ) + 2 Hi-Hats w cymbals, tambourines etc - and when he started going he was like a big machinery thumping. Adam was much younger white boy who played harmonica.

There was this gig in my hometown where two local musicians were standing right behind my mixing console. Mr Satan - Sterling Magee was doing his thing dressed up like party. Adam Gussow had boots, jeans, red-black checkered shirt and a scarf. One musician behind me said to the other : "That harmonica player looks like a lumberjack!" - the other replied : "Yup! And that other guy looks like a forestry machine!"

OK - so much about the veer - back to subject. When we had a gig in my old hometown , we were walking on a street when my mother happened to meet us. Naturally I introduced them. Mr Satan took my mother by the hand - bowed down VERY deep and said : "Hello, Mrs. Nuuska's Mother!" 😂

I saw this on the GC site and I did like the look, just was not sure how well built they are or how they sound. good to know it's a solid option, thanks BC!
