OK, after 4 months of playing, I'm almost ready to post a song on Soundclick. Yeah, it's gonna suck, but I wanna do it anyway. I want a baseline so I can have some sort of audio record of my progress or lack of it. Once I've got it, I might as well let you mutts have a good chuckle.Only one problem. I need something to record it on. Any thoughts on what I should look for that's reasonably (<$200, if possible) priced? I assume I need to make an MP3 somehow? Should I just forget the whole thing?

If you're on a Mac you can use Garage Band (Windows folks must have something similar). I run a mike through m-audio FastTrack into a USB port then to Garage Band.

You can get started with an MXL 63MBP mike and free software from Musician's Friend I got my mike from my local music store; it came highly recommended and certainly does the trick for me. I don't have a pickup in any of my guitars so I mike it.
I'm sure you'll get other suggestions....good luck, we are looking forward to hearing you. jgm

My wife gave me a Zoom H2, Christmas 07.

Pretty killer little recorder, regularly sells for $199.00, self contained with not half bad internal mics.

USB ports to the computer & manages sound files much the same as digital pictures. I can also plug an external mic or line out from my mixer. My opinion it's a lot of recorder for $199.

About the size of a fat cell phone, runs for hours on 2 AA's & tougher than I'd expected, mine has taken a couple nasty tumbles.

A few other members have the bigger brother,Zoom H4's (another $100) & get good results.

Here's a link for the H2

Try messing around with ACID 6 if you have a p.c. It's pretty user friendly, has alot of e.q. options and is fairly cheap. The nice thing is it won't kill your computer everytime you use it. But if you can, or have the money, I always think analog sounds so much better than digital.

Tony, good for you for deciding to record a song and post it on Soundclick....it'll be great, I'm sure! The songs you listen to on my Soundclick page were recorded on an M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96. I picked it up used off Craigs for a hundred bucks. It connects to the PC thru a USB cable. Press record. Play your song. Press record again to stop. Turn it off and unplug and then replug into the USB port. It shows up as a drive in My Computer. Click on it's icon and you see the (numbered) file you just recorded. Double click on that file and it's copied to your media player (in my case, ITunes) and starts playback. Pretty easy stuff...and it's so cool (or, often, sort of depressing...) to hear how you're doing! Oh, and I second the recs on the Zoom units, too...the H2 is on my list...anyway...go for it, man.

Hi there Tony. Looking forward to your first soundclick upload. One thing about LTG is folks are darn encouraging here and I don't recall anyone slamming another's efforts. On other forums one might be a bit reluctant to post, "check out my latest effort". Seems at times the schoolyard bullying doesn't disappear in some adults. You don't see that here at LTG; i.e. the ridicule just to be hurtful.

This place is full of talent and I gotta feeling folks are gonna be pleasantly surprised by what you will bring to the table after only 4 months.

Peace

Get yourself a Zoom H2, or do like I did, get a Zoom H4 so there's a whole bunch of stuff on it you can't figure out how to use  .

:) By the way Jeff.......I really like the "mike" boom. Looks a lot better than what I usually rig up.

I'm a big fan of Audacity (freeware). It took me literally, 5 minutes to download and start recording multi-tracks. I got a Samson USB mike (e.g. http://www.zzounds.com/item--SAMC03U) with multipattern new on eBay for a good price (just be sure you get a cable and a mike stand too). Plug and play as they say. The thing is built like a tank, you could toss it across the room and it wouldn't break.

I struggled with soundclick and putfile and ended up at Reverbnation.com. Free and VERY easy to start uploading...

Go for it! Good luck. Good call.

I use Sound Blaster Creative Play Center and the mic I got with my pute 8 years ago. I realized early on that nothing's gonna help me.

I don't know about that Doc. Me and Frank Sinatra sound about the same....on my wire recorder, (remember...those things that came before tape recorders) Steffan
