Hello!

So, many moons ago I owned the below Guild dreadnaught (that's me playing it). I loved it very much, but had to sell it. Well, times are slightly less rough now, and I want to try and track down the same model. But I can't remember the model number! Can anyone tell what it is from this photo? Thank you!

It looks like my DV 52 only mine is HG and that one looks matte.

Not a DV52, which have ebony fretboards.

D40 maybe?

Yea didn’t see that, was focused on the headstock and gold hardware. Sorry.

Welcome to a wonderful guitar forum. Do you remember if back and sides were mahogany or rosewood? From the picture I am thinking mahogany so I am agreeing with awagner - D40

Thanks for the replies, guys! I think I remember it having a single digit code, and it was a 1994. My research is leading me to the D6?

Welcome. Stick around - nice bunch of folks around here.

I was going to suggest D6 as well.

Here are some photos of mine for comparison:

D6's and DV-6's shared the same "AD" serial number prefix, but the DV-6' started in '95 or '96. If it is a '94 it is probably a D6.

If we agree that the guitar has mahogany back and sides, then it is not a DV6, which is rosewood.

EDIT: I might be wrong about this. I have seen it referred to as both rosewood and mahogany, depending on the source.

I believe the D6 and DV4 have mahogany back and sides, as does the D40.

The question I have is whether or not the guitars are essentially the same with only different model designations based on the year produced (D60/66, F44/GF60M, F50R/JF55, etc.)

Hi, this is going completely off memory, but I believe it is likely a D-6 as well, which would be satin finish, and a substitute for the D-40 for the given years produced (or so I was told). I've owned two or three DV-6 NT HG's, and I don't believe that any of mine were from prior to the mid 90's: which in my case, meant '97 - twice, & I think more like '98. That said, I have seen at least two satin finished versions of the DV-6 (from Westerly), not to be confused with the later versions. And I believe I've seen a version of the D-6 from even earlier than '94 - (perhaps as early as '90). But again, that's going from memory--& not guaranteed to be correct. I think one of the primary differences between the DV-6 & D-6 was the bracing. Shaved, versus straight? While the DV-52 may have been scalloped... but having never owned one of those, I cannot say for certain! Good luck, and this shouldn't be too difficult to solve. :)

The US made DV-6s were mahogany back & sides, the later (Mexican?) made ones were Rosewood (and they never made DV-52s outside of the US).

My goodness, thank you everyone! Looking at those pictures (thanks gjmalcyon) I'm sure it was a D6 in satin finish. So, now the hunt is on to find another!

Rosewood DV-6's and mahogany DV-4's were built in Tacoma (and DV-6 production continued in Mexico). I have a Tacoma rosewood DV-6 that is astonishingly good for what I paid for it (~$800 new). If I'm ever released from my "no more guitars!" ban by She Who Must Be Obeyed I will start the hunt for a Tacoma DV-4.

My goodness...

LOL, these guys really know their Guilds, don't they? I've never heard of a D6, and you won't get many answers from me, except maybe about jumbo 12-strings, but there's certainly an abundant amount of collective Guild knowledge here, that's for sure. Welcome to the forum!

So, now the hunt is on to find another!

Enjoy the hunt! That's half the fun!

The D6 was first released in 1992. I have a ‘92 with a gloss natural finish (D6-nt-hg). The D6 was produced through 1995, and the DV-6 was then first introduced within the same year (‘95). Both Westerly-made versions had solid mahogany back & sides. The later made in Mexico DV-6 was a very different animal!

Edit - Adding a pic of my '92 D6-nt-hg. This one is in near-mint condition. Some areas that appear to be marks are actually mild bearclaw.

That's a beauty, bobouz! I've got to get me a satin finish one, unfortunately there are currently none on sale in the UK!
