I've been watching Sir Paul on youtube all night; Blackbird. I know, this post wasn't about Paul however, I don't think enough people give him credit for his guitar playing. He is an incredible player!

Has anyone found footage of John or George playing their Starfire's?

Hi JimBetts - As far as anyone knows, the Beatles had only one Starfire among them, a 1966 custom-made 12 string which has not been documented as ever being used on any of their recordings.

John and George did however, own matching Gibson J160e's , Epiphone Casinos (different in that George's had a vibrato), Martin D-28's (Paul and John) and '61 sonic blue Fender strats (reportedly played on Nowhere Man) All of these instruments were reportedly used on various Beatles recordings. In addition, the J160's and Casinos were also played in live performances.
The non-matching electric guitars used by the group included Rickenbackers, Gretsches,Hofners, Paul's Fender Esquire,et al. Acoustic instruments included a Framus Hootenanny 12 string (You've Got To Hide Your Love Away) a Jose Ramirez (And I Love Her ), and Paul's Epiphone Texan (Yesterday). 8)

You forgot to mention George's rosewood tele. I'm sure there were many more too.

Much appologies for the thread hijack...

A thread hijack? In this Forum? It's a rare thread that's not jacked, then jacked up, wheels and accessories removed, then all replaced with better-than-original parts, back down on the road, and ready to be either continued or driven off again in yet another direction.

Apologizing for a thread hijack here is like being at a nutritionist's conference and saying you're sorry for having eaten a hearty breakfast.

Now that was funny! This is a fine example of why this has become the only guitar forum I participate in...

Hey there Jim,

Regarding thread hijacking, I have to agree with our other distinguished members who have been on this forum a lot longer than me. Guess that's what makes this place so interesting, informative and never, ever boring. Not only do these guys know their stuff, but they manage to incorporate their outlandish wit smack dab in the middle of a serious discussion - I like that! You might say no one seems to take this so seriously that it becomes a "one trick pony" mentality. This little horsie does many tricks.....summed up rather nicely by our resident sage philosopher Coastie:"Don't fear the Veer"

Thanks for the reminder re George's Tele, a very beautiful guitar. And I forgot to mention Paul's Epiphone Casino. He actually got his before John and George and apparently, taken with his new instrument, they decided to get their own. The rest is Beatles (and musical) history! :D :D

I'm somewhat of a Beatles guy myself, have been since the release of Abbey Road. That day my friends sister won the album on a radio give-away. The radio station van stopped in front of my house to give her the album. We all went inside to listen to it and I was hooked, a Beatles fan forever! I was almost eight at the time.

Anyway, I love the story about how the Casino morphed into the Revolution...

It doesn't get much sweeter than side two of Abbey Road...you obviously were/are an amazingly bright and perceptive young man!

BTW, side one's not too shabby either...

Abbey Road is the only Beatles recording I own. Have no idea why. Beatles were always part of the background but never important enough to spend money on. Of course I only have it on vinyl so I have not listened to it in a Very Long Time.

Most underrated Beatles track - side one, Abbey Road - "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". Because of the simplicity of the lyrics, no one gives it much attention, but the *playing* is the Beatles at their peak. John's guitar playing that matches his vocals, Paul's bass playing...wow!

The other part of Abbey Road that always blows me away is the "guitar fight" at the end of side two. According to Geoff Emerick, the engineer, this was recorded live, in one take! In order, it's Paul, George, and John taking turns. One of the last times they ever played together...

Hi Walrus,

If there was only one chance to see the Beatles perform, the "guitar fight" sequence is the one I'd most like to see. Absoluting great! I also love the vocals on this album, particularly the lush three-part harmony in Because and Sun King.

Their performance is even more amazing when one considers all that was happening to them personally. This was their last album together and to say they went out on a high note is an understatement.
