Hello musicians.
Anybody else feel this way? Although I am confident in myself and can certainly hold my own, sometimes I need to respond differently.
So I find from time to time, in the professional circles that my wife works in, that when people ask me what I do for a living, simply stating "I'm a musician" and then watching them chuckle or classify me mentally, along with watching the hope go out of my mother in laws eyes, lol, it left me feeling, well, on the spot with no real follow up.
Recently when asked, I responded with this below, and left them standing there back on their heels as I refreshed my drink. Awkward?

Knowing how creative you guys are, I would love to hear you're best intelligent response.

So again, when asked "and what do you do John?" I responded:

"I have been blessed enough to be a fiber in the universal network and language, that helps create memories, thoughts, and emotions. Invoking, a response from you the listener, thus setting the stage for you to love, and be loved"

What is your National Security Clearance designation?

Oh, then I’m afraid I can’t tell you.

"It's classified, and very dangerous. Even talking about it can immediately put others around me at risk. As a matter of fact, just last week, I was at a cocktail party when all of a sudden..."

I'm not a musician so I don't know how I'd respond. However, I'm a scientist and often have to "dumb down" what I do in order for some (not all) folks to understand. Most people just nod and walk away whether they understand or not because, to them, science is boring and they've classified me as nerd. Bias can be a terrible thing.

All you need is Love.

John

Classifications are for other people. We're each well beyond that ;]

On a barely related topic, I actually enjoy wearing a mask in public. Just imagine, to be no one or nothing.

I'm guessing those are "chuckles of envy" from people working in a cubicle all day. I know I'm envious and I am not in a cubicle! Of course part of it is they also don't think it's "work", even though it is.

I do like GAD's idea. Emphasize "professional" and see what happens.

But the "bias" and "categorization" mentioned above are good points. I never cared for people who might judge me based on my occupation (or anything else for that matter). Perhaps it's time to just let it go, it's their problem they are judgmental and to be honest, it's pretty rude to make assumptions about you like that.

Somehow I am reminded of this which does capture not doing what people think aspect of things.

Now I always respond with "Musician." It is my purpose in life.
