New to this forum so Hi.
One of my students has a 1982 Guild D46 (BLD) 6 string acoustic and I would like to know what the woods are.
The top appears to be solid spruce and the fretboard is a dark rosewood but the sides, back and neck I don't recognize.
I don't have a pic but the S/B/N are a blond to dark grain and are solid not lam.
Has anyone had experience with this guitar?
Thanks.

Stigg,
As Jonas said, the D-46 back/sides/neck were made of ash... sort of caramel colored with a very pronounced grain. Many of the early D-46s (like my '81, link to my pics in my sig) had a three-piece back, with a 2-3" centerpiece of rosewood flanked by straight-grained bookmatched ash. Around late '81 or '82, they eliminated the rosewood centerpiece, making the backs of bookmatched ash with a marquee strip down the seam.

My D-46 has been my main "player" since I picked it about a year ago. Very nice tone when fingerpicked (w nails)... it's mids and trebles ring out a little more than my rosewood D-55, and the bass is nearly as good (and not as overpowering as the D-55). It's got more sparkle (and more power) than my maple G-37, but is "smoother" than my mahogany dreads. Strummed with a flat pick, it has great volume and projection... one of my loudest. I guess I'd say she's a great "all around" guitar.... handles just about anything I would play, from soft ballads to jangly cowboy tunes.

If your student's D-46 plays and sounds anything like mine, it would be a great instrument to learn on (better than the playwood "Stella" I started with 40+ years ago!).
