I have an opportunity to purchase a used Guild x175b guitar, at what appears to be an excellent price, from a very reputable source. It looks very nice, but as it isn't local, I can't actually touch or play it.
Yes, there are many reviews available on line, but I'm always suspicious of them, as none ever advise one that the item being reviewed is a dog and should be avoided at all costs. They always seem to be glowing.
Thus, I'd feel better hearing from anyone who owns or owned this particular guitar and can give me some insight into it's quality and whether it should be embraced or avoided.
Please and thanks.

GAD,
The guitar is an x175b Manhattan blond from the Newark St. collection with a Bigsby B60 vibrato tailpiece.
From your review, it seems to be good value for the cost.
It currently sells for $1,979.00 (new) here in Canada, and the seller wants $1249.00 Cdn., so if I don't have to factor in alimony payments, I might just grab it. Thanks for your help.

Anyhoo, yeah I liked that guitar. It was one of the first Newark St. models I'd owned and I was pleasantly impressed.

I have a NS X175 with a Bigsby. It’s a lot of guitar for the money. The fit and finish are top notch. GAD said it all better in his review, but my experience is that this is a quality guitar. Its not in the same league as my X500, but it doesn’t try to be. It’s its own thing. The PU’s sound great; they can produce a variety of tones for most types of music. The main shortcoming is the pots, they need an upgrade before it really can be considered for gigging, but after that I have no problem using it live. I don’t think you would be disappointed.

Hi Dennis,
Curious about the pots. What was the issue with the original pots and what did you upgrade to?

The original pots didn’t have an even sweep; there was of a short space that was about 70% of the effectiveness.
I went with CTS pots. Big improvement. If I recall, Walter did a similar upgrade to his NS X175.

Great to know - thanks. I have been considering buying a Newark Street Starfire IV - I imagine it would have the same issue.

I have a few Newark reissue Guilds. Bodywork is excellent. Pots are ok too. They may not be cts-quality but they're not "crap" either. I did not experience technical problems with them. So in my opinion it is not absolutely necessary to replace them unless you don't like the "sweep" of course as mentioned above.

Yeah, I agree, didn’t have a technical problem with the pots, it’s not strictly necessary, but it is an area where Guild cut corners. one may be happy with the pots, or may want something else. Personally, I feel it’s something worth mentioning.

With all the feedback I get, how did "I’ve owned a few nice Gretsches including a upetzer SSLVO" get through the cracks? Yikes.
dammit, I've been looking for one of those on Google ever since

I'm surprised no one has been talking about this:
We have discussed that model a few times, one example:
