I've seen Pat many times over the years and he's always switched guitars like that on certain tunes (Phase Dance, San Lorenzo and a few others).
When he switches from his Guild acoustic to his archtop, in the past it was his es175, but that one could be his Ibanez signiture
model with a few mods. I couldn't really read the headstock.
I'm not up on Guild acoustics, but that one he's playing is really cool 8)
I've never thought of Pat Metheny as "smooth jazz" per se, but if you get a chance, check out some of Pats' straight ahead jazz.
He's such a versatile player IMHO.
