Pulled my "Esential Youngbloods" CD this weekend to spin "Darkness Darkness"... always loved that stingin' bumblebee tone on the leads, could it be called "fat"? Anyway I noticed for the first time in the photo inside the back cover a harp-shaped tailpiece on the electric, with a tiny triangle on the bottom, sure looks like a Guild even though the headstock is cropped out of the pic, in fact looks like an M-75 as pictured on pages 70-71 of Hans' book. So went looking on Youtube and found the video linked here. A little blurry but the acoustic looks like a Guild too! So now I wonder, is that magical timbre due to an M75 being used on Darkness Darkness? Anybody got any history lessons?

Hi Al: for the younger members of the Beaver Lodge ... Darkness, Darkness J
Funny you should mention the Beaver Lodge, as I was catching up on their background, Wikipedia has them getting their start on the Canadian circuit... Yeah, I probably should have posted the tune, but I was looking to see if there was any video of "the AXE".

I tried googling the CD ... maybe get a shot of the inside cover ... can you scan it and post it? (our BB doesn't have the 'this thread is no good without pics' smiley :D ) Besides, I wanted to listen to DD anyway.

HI Cap, sorry, as a techno dinosaur I don't have a scanner, in fact, not even a PC at home. The electric in the vid I linked looked like it must be the same one, burst finish, white pickups, no f-holes, no bigsby. Photo inside CD case obscures a lot of details, can't see pickguard shape or if there's a second pickup (obscured by hands), or which fret the neck joins body at (obscured by mic stand!). Control placement only seems to match the M75 though and 4 knobs must indicate dual pickups.

Well, I know that Banana(Lowell Levinger) used at least a couple of Guilds, & The Youngbloods were always among my favorite bands(Sunlight. especially). I think I've seen his guit choice discussed before, but not sure where, or what the models were. He might respond to an e-mail through his website, http://www.vintageinstruments.com/

Here are a few pics of the guitar shown in the OP's video link, Banana's Sunburst Guild Aristocrat with Franz pickups, plus an Aristocrat Tenor!!:

These pics are on Banana's (Lowell Levenger's) Vintage Instrument site.
I don't know if he has the right date for the Aristocrat, but the pics are way cool.....

Wow thanks gents!.. I wasn't a major fan but heard "Darkness" on the radio coming to work a couple of years back and said "Oh yeah how could I have forgotten about that one!" Since times were good I just ordered up the whole CD. Never could afford to buy like that when I was a kid, but if I'd seen a 45 of it back then, I'd still own it now!
Slight veer: Every once in a while I hear something that inspires me to just buy the whole album on the strength of one song. Most recently (during drive to work again) was Otis Taylor: "Truth is not Fiction". Cut was "Past Times" (guitar tone remiscent of "Darkness"). Had to wait for the cut to end to find out what it was, then ordered up the disc. There's some stuff on there that recalls Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady at their best, in a Mayall's "Turning Point" kind of way: "blues without bashing", and toss in a splash of world music...on top of that, this is the CD that proved to me that CD sound has finally achieved its true potential for equalling vinyl, in fact, I can play the bass at true volume without worrying about the low freq feedback into my turntable!
Whoah Gilded you snuck that link in on me 'fore I had a chance to explore his site thoroughly.. A tenor M75! Now I'm REALLY wondering what that lead was played on! Anymore Youngbloods input is welcome!

For some reason it didn't get the radio play it deserved, never could figure that out myself. Thanks, SG...say don't I know you from somewhere? Are you the guy Gibson named that guitar after?
By the way if you liked that tone you'll really love that guy from Quicksilver Messenger Service who DID play an SG: John Cipollina, now sadly gone...but still findable on the 'net!
