Guild repair specialist?

I just lucked into a '60s F-30NT at an estate sale. Probably overpaid, but it's a cool instrument with great tone. It does, unfortunately, need a neck reset. I don't have anybody locally in Indianapolis to do guitar work for me, so I'll probably be sending it somewhere if I elect to have the work done. I may just sell it as is rather than putting more $ into it, depending on the est. repair costs.

Anybody out there specialize in Guilds and/or have reasonable rates for neck resets and fret work? Most of the repair contacts I've garnered are Martin or Gibson guys.

Thanks,
Andrew

Harmon,

Man, there for a second there, I thought you were Hans. On first glance, your screen names look alike.

Just a suggestion. The is a store there where you live called The Podium. Those guys are great, and I'll bet if they can't fix it, they can put you onto someone who can. I bought a guitar from them last year, and they were super to deal with and I gather they have a great deal of expertise. Give them a call.

Actually, the Podium's in Minneapolis (where I used to live), not Indianapolis (where I live now). Marty, the repairman there, was the first guy I talked to. He likes to redo old Harmony guitars, but doesn't confine himself to a specialty. He also does good work....but the prices have gone up a bit and I'm now looking at something like $550+ for a neck reset and fret job if he does it, plus the shipping there and back. I'd like to find a few more options to consider before resigning myself to putting that much more into the guitar if I decide to go the repair route at all.

I would have it done at the Guild Repair center in Nashville. Go to the fender website and email the customer service address. I asked a question about a Guild guitar, and promptly got a very good price quote. The only drawback would be the shipping cost, and it may take some time to work it in.

Ask around for someone experienced in Gibson neck re-sets. The Gibson neck joint is a carbon copy of the Guild neck joint and is MUCH different than a Martin neck joint. I needed to reset the neck on my old D40 and couldn't find a Guild repairman that I trusted so I took it to the local Gibson repair shop. They showed me a disassembled Guild and a disassembled Gibson and the neck joints were identical. They did a good job but it wasn't cheap.

Put out a call on a local musician's forum or on CL. I've usually gotten lots of great advice from folks. If you want to ship it out, one of the best is next door in Ohio.

You may also want to go to the Guild website, look under authorized repair centers and see if there is one in Indy. There has to be at least one. Give them a call, get a quote and see if you feel comfortable with them. It will surely lighten your repair bill if you have the work done locally.

Great advice. Indy is also very centrally located. If you cannot find somebody local, there should be somebody within driving distance.... like Bloomington, Louisville, Cincy or even Chicago. It would probably be worth your time to make a couple drives if you find the right guy... that should give you more peace of mind and you also avoid shipping costs.

Welcome aboard Andrew. Hey, my brother is in Lafayette & I'm pretty certain he has a guy he's pretty comfortable with. It's an hour from you, give or take.

Scott Gierman at Elderly Instruments in East Lansing, MI, 517-334-5805. He's the only one that I let touch my Guilds (as far as working on them, anyway).

Repair quotes I've gotten thus far are a little discouraging. Range has been $450-825 for a refret and neck reset...more than I really want to spend at this point. I've recently put in orders for several guitars for my website and probably should just cut my losses on this one. Still would love the info on any local guys if you can get it!
