Does anyone know what's going on with Guild prices? I checked out Elderly Instruments site last night and saw that the GAD 30RE I bought last September had jumped in price to $1070.00! While a nice guitar, I would give serious pause to shelling out that kind of dough for it, much more so at Guild's list, $1400. It was a much better deal at its previous price point. And speaking of points, I'll get to mine - Have U.S. made Guilds been similarly affected?

I'm sure one of the dealers will chime in shortly, but my guess is that prices HAVE gone up. Martin did the same thing a short time back too.

Life ain't gettin' any cheaper...

Isn't Elderly kinda' steep to begin with, or did you buy your GAD there geezah?

I think you can get them much cheaper on eBay.

I bought the Guild there, since it was the only shop that would take my old, issue-ridden Gibson in trade...not that they gave me a heck of a lot for it. It was also a place I wanted to visit, having been aware of it since the late seventies, when I got into guitars. But I didn't think their GAD prices were out of line with prices I'd seen locally.

1. The drop in the dollar vs. foreign currencies has made imported products of all kinds more expensive here in the USA.

2. Prices on the GAD line have gone up recently just about everywhere.

3. Be careful of the GADs you see on ebay. Many of them are seconds and have the word "Used" stamped on the headstock. They have no factory warranty.

With the rise in prices for the GAD line and the poor resale value of Guild USA guitars, it is possible to pick up a used USA Guild in great shape for not much more than a new GAD.

Well, this *should* cause inflation on the price of older, USA-made guitars. I guess we'll see.

Regarding jw's point #1... Just because the dollar has devaluated against foreign currencies is not an automatic explanation for higher import prices, though. Foreign companies will often contain price increases (in $US) so as not to lose business (and will end up taking losses in sale price), particularly on their "loss leader" products on the lower end. That said, since GADs are FMIC (American company) product, this argument makes more sense.

I've noticed higher prices on vintage Ibanez acoustics recently (started even before the crash). I don't know how that this has anything to do with the dollar drop, but it has been interesting.

It's been said that when securities drop badly, people put their money into tangible assets (like collectibles). Maybe that's what's going on.
