As many of you know I have a large collection of Guild literature, (though probably not as big as GAD's). Along with the Catalogs, Brochures, Flyers, and Price sheets I have also collected Guild Magazine Ads, (hence the title of the thread!)

Here's an Guild ad from the April, 1983 edition of Guitar Player.

So let's see how the Guilds of Grot match up!

X-Sparkles.jpg

I'm close. Not the same colors except mine are well, all the same color! (Is "Black Sparkle" a color?)

As noted previously I don't now about the later knobs on the Humbucker X-79.

And don't ask me what the three little switches do on the triple Single Coil X-79, that's for me to know and Hans to explain in Volume II, (I've got to leave him something!)

For those of you not up on your 80's Guild Basses that's a X-702 in the middle.

I love having the old ads because it really brings me back - especially paging through entire guitar magazines from the '80s.

You take it to a new level though when you start recreating the ads!

Here's our next Guild magazine ad:

When the thrill is gone.jpg

I don't know what magazine this came out of as it doesn't say on the other side.

Once again, let's see how we match up.

Starting on the left with the Red X-79. At one time I had a guitar just like this! See the next photo:

Picture-005.jpg

There it is on the upper left! I sold it when I got the Black Sparkle model posted previously. (Hmm, the S-25, M-75GS and B-302 bass are also long gone!)

Now how about the SB-202 bass?

Yep, got that:

SB-202.jpg

Well will you look at that, same color and everything! Now I have always wondered about the knobs on my bass as they are different then most Guild knobs. Too bad you can't see the knobs on the bass in the ad! I forget why, but I am lead to believe my knobs are original. (Volume II should settle this!)

And last but not least, the S-275 on the right.

Welp, close but no cigar! Closest I can come is an S-250. Do I get partial credit? Of course I could trot out the excuse that I don't collect a lot of gold hardware Guilds because the gold always fades so bad. I'm a nickle/German silver/chrome kind of guy! (That's why the M-75GS from above went. It was replaced with a M-75CS.)

As always, thanks for looking and keep on rocking!

I don't need any more solidbody guitars, but I really like the way this one looks. Did it ever come equipped with HB-1s?

I believe Hans has said that while HB1s were being made they were always an option.

As GAD said you might have been able to special order them but by this time Guild had moved on to the XR7 generation.

It seems like finding one with HB-1s will be looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. Maybe it would just be easier to get one with XR7s and swap them for a pair of HB-1s.
