I have just acquired an old D66 and am interested to learn more about about it. It is not in a great condition, its previous owner having dragged it around all of the folk clubs in London. But, after a recent overhaul and some nice new strings, it sounds amazing and plays beautifully. The information that I have been able to find so far suggests that the guitar is from the mid 1980s but the folk singer (mentioned above) says he was playing it in the 1970s...is he right?

Many thanks

Aaron

Hello AaronS,

Welcome! From what I can see in the photos I believe you have a D-25 from the first half of the '70s. If you give the serial number, I should be able to tell you what year your guitar was completed.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

The D66 is indeed from the 1980s, but the guitar pictured is not a D66. The D66 (renamed the D60 in 1987) had high end appointments.

The guitar pictured resembles a D25, or similar model. Pictures of the label and the serial number would be helpful.

That is amazingly helpful, thank you so much.
The serial number is 80586 and the inside label is quite smudged (see picture).
The information you have given me is really helpful, and very much appreciated.
thanks again

Just curious, what made you think the Guitar is a D66?

Here is a link to one that sold. Very different guitar.

Hi and thank you again.
In answer to the question, why I thought it was a D66? That the model that the guy at the guitar store guessed it was. I think he'd seen or heard of a D66 that was that nice amber colour. I took him at his word but then the dates didn't match up, my friend the original owner (who sadly died), had clearly had the guitar since the 1970s.

Thanks also for the link, you are right quite a different beast, I don't really see how one could confuse the two.

Any ideas about value?

Thanks again, again, this site is such a great community and a wealth of knowledge.

Hi again. Thanks for all the information and wisdom here. I have to say that the (what I now know is a) D25 is one of the most playable guitars I have had the pleasure of playing. I am trying to work out why that is.
I particularly like the neck shape and dimensions. I think it's a D shape, am I right?

Here are a few pics of a Guild D66 for a reference. Cool D25 you got there.
