I just ordered a Guild D4 HR 1997 from Guitar Center. I have read good things about it on this forum. Supposedly, it is build just like a D25 from the 70s'. I have not been able to find too much info on the D4. It is a very inexpensive. Any thoughts on why? Any other thoughts on this guitar? Thanks mcarter

The D-25 didn't have much bling, but the D-4 has a bit less.

They can be excellent guitars. The letters "HR" refer to a hand-rubbed finish.

I think that a "satin" finish is correct.

Earlier DCE1s and D4s had sprayed satin finishes (maybe nitro?) The hand-rubbed finishes on the later DCE1s, D4s, and DV4s is little a little less satin-y. It was some kind of "gel" product - explained better by a former Westerly employee somewhere in this forum. And I think it worked well with the arched back. My former hand-rubbed DCE1 was one of the better recording guitars I've owned. No joke, it recorded better than my custom shop F30r-ls. Just the right amount of sustain and projection, and very balanced.

We sometimes characterize the D4 as the "gateway drug" for vintage Guild guitar collecting. Until recently nice examples could be found around the $400 price point, but that's been increasing.

I bought one several years ago for She Who Must Be Obeyed as a Christmas gift, and it is fine guitar.

I overhauled a severely dehydrated and sorry looking D4 NT-HR a couple of years ago. I learned a lot. Mainly, that they're a fantastic sounding entry-level Guild. Those curved backs (like the one on my D-25) really adds a punch. You won't be sorry.
