Dave,
Yes, your D-17 would be all-mahogany. The top would be solid mahogany. The back is laminated mahogany (outer veneers of mahogany with an inner ply of some other wood... Hans Moust has mentioned soft maple or poplar as the core woods in laminates) pressed into the arched shape. I think the sides are probably solid, but am not sure. You might be able to discern whther the sides are solid by pullng the end pin, and looking at the edge of the sidewood exposed in the hole.

Enjoy!

Hey Dave,

I don't have a D17, but I've got a D15. Similar guitars, my understanding is the D17 has binding, where as my D15 does not.

It is an all hog guitar, back and sides I believe are laminated, with the back arched, and a solid mahogany top. I love mine, it's got a nice deep growl to it. A friend of mine describes it as a very masculine sound. To my ear it is radically different to a guitar with hog sides and back and a spruce top. I like them, it would take much to pry my D15 away from me. Only other thing I would say is it is quite possibly the heaviest wood and stringed instrument I've ever owned and is classified as a deadly weapon in some countries!

cheers

Dave, I have a D17. All solid mahogany, back sides and neck. Laminated arched back as detailed by GardMan. Rosewood fretboard and bridge. White plastic binding front and back, full gloss nitro finish. Same size shape and bracing as D15, D16 and D25 arch backs. It's an awesome sounding mahogany guitar. The only hog tops I like better are Santa Cruz. Buy me a SC and I'll give you my D17. Otherwise, it's going to the grave with me. I've got a K&K in it and the amplified sound is great, soundboard guys love it.

Here's a pic.

Sorry ,got to learn how to show off my guitars. soon. Dave
Hi Dave, no problem. It's relatively easy. You need to have your photos on some kind of webpage like imageshack or any other photo hosting page. It should be not full resolution, as otherwise the picture would appear way to big here.
Then you take the link to that *.jpg picture and paste the link between the "Img" signs that appear on top of a new message.
When you right click on the picture that Dr. Spivey posted and go on "properties" you see such a link for instance.

Re: laminate sides. Not a 100% fool proof method but typically if solid wood is used for the sides there will be internal "braces" running from top to back. Laminate, no side bracing.
