Guild D-25 value question

I have what I believe to be a 1972 Guild D-25 that I bought when I first went to college (1971-72). I don't have the serial number in front of me because I'm at work, but I'll post it later. I've been thinking about selling it because I need to have an acoustic that I can use plugged in for church. It is the mahogany color (brown) with the flat back. It is all original except for 1) I had Grover tuners installed on it when I first got it by the place I bought it from (Don Warner Music in Richmond, VA), 2) the neck was reset by an authorized Fender luthier and the job was very well done (1999) and 3) the pickguard had to be replaced because it had started to come unglued. Everything else is all original. Bridge has not been reglued. The body is in excellent condition.

If the thing is of some value, I may consider putting some type of pickup on it. Any advice on what to put in that wouldn't devalue the guitar would also be appreciated.

Welcome b, the D-25s seem to be all over the place price wise at the moment. There was a '71 that didn't meet the reserve price of $835 yesterday and then there are others, mine for example, my '72 that I got for $512, which I thought was a good deal for me. I have seen them advertised at $1100, that one isn't selling, and Guildzilla just stole a '78 for something like $230 and I got my '76 for $300 CAD (0.25 US)

The'72 is a good one, all mahogany, light as a feather and IMO will only be worth more in the future.

It just might be a guitar that you want back after you sell it.

What it's worth is whatever someone will pay you for it, how's that for deep and noncommital? Ultimately you have to be pleased selling it a price, think about that. What would you be happy to sell it for? If you're serious about selling, float it here first.

Personally, I'd hold onto that one. Those are pretty sweet guitars, particularly the solid back ones. There are a lot of great pickup options these days so it's hard to recommend just one. I like the Fishman stuff, both the Matrix undersaddle and the Rare Earth models. I've heard a lot of good things about the Baggs M1, as well as D-TAR.

Unless your looking to pick up a new guitar, plus some cash - it would seem to me that the D25M is an ideal guitar to just add some kind of pickup too and then plug it in.

I would second plaidseason's opinion. Amplify or mic the D-25... it's a classic, and will undoubtedly continue to grow in value. I saw a mint condition '71 or 72 sell for $995 last summer (I stopped bidding at $850). Dave

I know squat about acoustic pickups. Would adding one hurt the value of the guitar or enhance it? Which models would be addable that could later be removed without modifying the guitar?

With the work you've had done already, adding a pickup will do nothing to lower the value. Recommending a pickup is another story. I've had several different kinds & all served their purpose. I will be testing a new John Pearse acoustic pickup soon that is pretty inexpensive.

Sunrise?

I've recently bought a D25 '71 all mahogany and wait impatiently to get it here. I've also bought a Sunrise pickup on eBay, you know the one you fit into the soundhole, that I intend to install on the D25. I've heard Sunrise pups before and really liked them. Magnetic, but give you a fantastic acoustic sound, especially with a good preamp.
