There is one for sale not too far from me, and I'm intrigued by it. All mahogany dreadnought, nice shape. Not much information out there, though.

I'd be curious to know about the neck- is it slender, chunky, somewhere in between?

Heck, I'd be happy just to talk to someone who owns one. They seem to be pretty darn scarce.

Anybody?

One of our members has had several... and I hope he will chime in. IIRC, he posted that all of the D-17s he has owned/played have narrow necks. I think he said closer to 1-5/8" nut width (as opposed to 1-11/16").

The D-17 was part of the Mahogany Rush series from something like 1983 till 1986 or so.

The neck is slender. IMO one of the best Guilds ever produced. I have a D15 that I bought new in 1986. It's the only guitar I never sold.

"The neck is slender."

That's what I'm afraid of. I have a touch of arthritis in my thumbs, and slender necks (like the Martin MLO) just don't work for me anymore.

The neck on my old D-46 is perfect for me, and has been for 20 years. It's got a 1 11/16" nut, but a fair amount of "meat on the bone" beneath it.

I'm afraid that 1 5/8" just won't work for me. I really appreciate the feedback though.

Another question: the one near me is a D-17M. It's the only one I've seen with the "M" in the designation. It's right there on the label.

All the others are just "D-17."

Anybody know why that is?

Right, but why only on this one?

In those brochures you posted (thanks, btw, interesting!) this model is simply a "D-17." Maybe there is no answer?

Ken,

Have had four D17s.

They had narrow nuts, and the necks were thin as well.
All were uncomfortable to play, and I finally gave up.
If arthritis as you've described is a consideration,
I would not recommend a D17.

Thanks for the photos, B88, those are great. And the advice from yourself and others. I've decided to pass.

The guitar is down in Denver, and I'm about 2 hours west of there. Wish I were closer so that I could try it out, but that ain't going to happen.

It's on Denver Craigslist if you guys want to have a look. I think it started at $950 a couple of months ago, $725 now. Nice guitar.

I am just guessing, but it may have been to differentiate between natural and the red/black ones? (M being Mahogany).
