Hello! I'm new to the forum and have a question for you guys!

What do you think about the Guild Contemporary Series, specifically the CV-2? I'm thinking of picking one up... does anyone on here have one? How would you compare it to the F40 and F47? Any information would be appreciated!

Welcome aboard; I'm sure someone who knows something will show up eventually. I think they're more "contemporary" as opposed to the traditional styles, but still Guild quality. :?:

Hi,
Welcome,
The Contemporary series were all made in the Tacoma WA which has been closed as Fender is relocating the plant to New Hartford CT. Whether they will be continued in New Hartford has yet to be seen. I will guess that they will continue at some point as it was under the Fender ownership that they got started.

Right now what you see on the market is leftover Tacoma instruments- and a lot of the contemporary series being sold as seconds, or blems, or used even though they are new- ebay has a good number of them at all times. These don't come with a factory warranty. Whether they are up to the excellent quality Tacoma was capable of producing is not really know as I haven't seen anyone on this board who has a new one guaranteed by Guild to compare with the factory seconds out there.

All of the sellers claim they are just like new, and that they are a bargain too. Frankly they may be like new, but they really aren't a bargain unless you get one for $600-$700. The prices asked for are more like what you should pay for new with a warranty from Guild- my opinion of course.

I was very interested in getting one, but other opportunities came up that seemed more reliable and I passed.

For the right money you might get a very nice guitar.
good luck.

Thanks for the info! The one I'm looking at is actually new, with warranty, for $1200 shipped (from a reputable and huge retailer). It's not one of the ones with USED stamped on the headstock... I also don't want to take a risk on one of those...

Any description of the sound? I've played a couple Guild F47s that I've really liked, and am wondering where the CV-2 would measure up.

Can't vouch for the CV-2, but that F47 is one VERY fine guitar. Graham has one (hog), and he's buying a second one (Rosewood).

I played a CV-1 and I believe Jeff has a CO-1.

I liked the one I played. Felt very light almost delicate, but delicate in the Guild way. Kinda like the lightest guard on the Steelers front line.

Great tone, easy playing.

Jeff has brought his to Arlington, and it was a blast to play.

Now compared to the F47, I'm in love with Smitty so I would go that route before the Contemporary. But that's just me, and I'm a bit different, right folks?

I've got a CO-1C (cedar top w/ mahogany b&s) and a F47 maple, both from Tacoma. Kind of different from each other, but each unique and very nice. The CO-1 is every bit the equal of a GS 5 Taylor for about 40% less street price if not more. The F47 is a great remake of a classic and ranks as one of my favorite Guilds. Apples and oranges, but you can't go wrong with either series, IMHO.
Good luck,
tj

Well Supe, welcome to LTG, and I hope you can find more of the info you seek here. Of course, you've already read my post on the AGF thread, but I've pasted it below for the LTGers, as I'd feel funny ignoring a CV-2 thread here:

Unbelievable prices for those guitars. I've had 2 CV-1Cs and currently a CV-2C. Also recently sold an F-47R, also Tacoma-made. I don't gig, so have not used the D-TAR much, but most of what I've read from those who do is very positive. I personally find it pretty natural-sounding. The CV body is the best-proportioned and most comfortable I've found, though it's not light. - Doesn't bother me when i stand to play, but could if you have back problems, etc. the acoustic tone and playability is what I like about them. Whether rosewood or maple, they are very loud, very clear and very resonant. Overall bright but with very strong, tight base. Equally good for finger style or flatpick. Also, the neck is just great - slim to middling C shape that stays that way all the way up. 1 3/4" nut. The only thing I'd watch for is the neck joint: on some, the fingerboard extention over the upper bout will tend to plane up a bit, rather than stay real straight. This can affect how much saddle you have too play with in action adjustments. That's why you'ld definitely want to order from someone with an easy returns policy.

But, overall I love this guitar.

$960, new w warranty ??? Screamin deal.

Fella trying to sell a pretty CO1C on our local Craigslist, used for 1200 hasn't found a buyer, it's been listed twice.

Well, I'm not 100% sure what to think. I got it, and it sounds good, and for the most part it looks good but there are definitely some imperfections:

1. Gaps in the ivoried binding at the top and bottom of the guitar as shown

2. The fretboard planes up a little, and the action is pretty high (I can lower that of course)

What should I do. Musicians Friend is sold out of these, so I can't replace it. I have the full warranty, so I could talk to Guild about it. Obivously I could get the action lowered, but will the neck be a problem? And is there any way I can fix the binding? Should I be worried? I only spent $960, and I do have the full warranty. And the guitar looks and sounds good otherwise. Let me know what you all think!

How does it sound? And based on the price, was it a scratch and dent sale?

The action looks fine, take it and get a set up. I don't know what you mean by the action planes up, but isn't this a bolt on neck? Meaning you can loosen the bolt and adjust the neck angle.

It sounds great and wasn't scratch and dent, though I honestly think that Musician's Friend probably should have sold it as such. I don't know much about the bolt on neck; I might take it into a local guitar shop and see what they can do. And I'll certainly get the action adjusted.

The price is about 800-900 bucks off of the street price it seems...MF doesn't have a CV-2 listed on their site to check. So I guess you have to decide if the binding issue is a big deal or not. And don't forget...with MF, don't you have 30 days to return the guitar? Sounds like you got a great deal due to a small cosmetic issue. Can't speak to the action, but I bet you can get that adjusted, which is certainly to be expected with any new guitar.

Good luck, bro!!!
